He was seventeen and he was tired, and he was thinking about nothing more dangerous than whether the rice would be cold by the time he finished. The senior disciples had eaten at sundown. They always ate first. By the time the outer disciples were called, the broth had a skin on it and the meat, if there was meat, had gone to the cultivators whose meridians could turn it into something. Mu Yan's meridian could turn nothing into anything. So he swept, and he waited, and he told himself he did not mind, and mostly the lie held. \nThen the mountain screamed. \nHe felt it before he heard it—a pressure that came down through the soles of his bare feet, through the floorboards, through the marrow of him. The lamps along the pavilion's spine guttered all at once, as if something enormous had drawn breath and stolen the air. Outside, a bell began to toll. Not the slow evening bell that called the disciples to rest. This one rang fast and wrong, hammered by a panicked hand, and under it rose a sound Mu Yan had never heard on the peaceful slopes of Azure Cloud: people screaming. Not one voice. Many. The sound a place makes when it is dying all at once. \nHe dropped the broom. \nBy the time he reached the pavilion doors, the sky was the color of a coal pit. Fire walked the upper terraces in long red strides, climbing the ancestral hall, the alchemy courts, the disciple dormitories where his junior brothers slept. The flames did not move the way fire should move. They climbed against the wind. They reached for things. Above them hung a banner he did not recognize, snapping in the heat-wind: a crimson lotus, \nblooming on a field of black, lit from beneath by the burning of everything Mu Yan had ever known. \nA figure in red robes drifted up the stone stair toward him. Drifted—not walked. The cultivator's feet never touched the steps. He held a saber loosely at his side, and the blade was already dark to the hilt, and he was smiling the patient smile of a butcher who has all night and a full pen. \nMu Yan ran the other way. \nHe was not a coward. He would tell himself that, many times, in the years that followed, and it was even true. He was seventeen and he could not cultivate, and against a man who walked on air he was meat—worse than meat, because meat at least could not be made to suffer for sport. So heran, down the back stair toward the Sword Hall, toward the only person on the mountain who had ever looked at him and not seen a waste of rice. \nHe found Elder Bai Qing in the courtyard of the Sword Hall, and he found him fighting. \nMu Yan had never seen his master fight. In four years he had only ever seen the old man tend his thirteen swords, polishing them in the evening with a rag and a kind of stern, patient love, telling Mu Yan that a blade was a promise you made to the future, and that a man who broke his promises did not deserve to hold steel. Now Bai Qing stood at the center of a storm of his own making, thirteen swords spinning around him like a wheel of light, and where they passed, red-robed men fell.
