MONTHLY CONFERENCE \nTHE HOLY EUCHARIST AND FRANCISCAN PENANCE \nOur Seraphic Father's radical turning to God in a life of pen-ance was his answer to the humility and love of the Incarnate Word,a humility and love that climaxed in the sombre spectacle on Cal-vary where the Love that loved us without end died in utter shameand dereliction. But this love of the Incarnate Word was not to belimited in space and time;before our Lord entered upon the agonyof his supreme sacrifice of love,he perpetuated his bloody immola-tion on the altar of the cross by the living memorial of the HolyEucharist. It was natural, therefore, that Saint Francis, whose heartwas filled with the words and deeds of the Incarnate Word and whorefused to think of anything but of him who spoke to him from theCross, should center his religious life upon the Holy Eucharist.Letus, therefore, turn to the meaning of the Holy Eucharist for a further understanding of the Franciscan life in penance. \n# 1.The Living Remembrance of the Lord's Passion\n\nIt is hardly adequate to say that our holy Father Francis had agreat devotion to the Eucharistic Christ. This could easily createthe impression that Francis had only a great veneration for theBlessed Sacrament-which in any case is true-but that he was pri-marily overwhelmed by the fact that Christ is present on our altars, dwells in our tabernacles, and lives in our midst under the spe-cies of bread and wine, and consequently adored him and offeredhim continual praise and thanksgiving, surrounded him with allexterior splendor, with lights, flowers, and incense, and offered himprivate and public adoration in many forms. There is no doubt thatFrancis urged this veneration of the Blessed Sacrament;indeed, heentreated his brethren and all the faithful to have a great reverenceand a most tender respect for the Body of our Lord.He himselfcleaned neglected churches, and in his Testament he made clearto his children what he expected of them:“And I want these mostHoly Mysteries above all else to be honored and venerated and keptin choice places.\"But this does not give us the reason for his love \n下 \nof the Holy Eucharist. For this we must look more deeply into thewritings of our Seraphic Father. Two texts of his lead us to theheart and basis of his devotion. In his first Rule Francis admonishedthe brethren:\"Thus with contrition and after confession let themwith great humility and reverence receive the Body and the Bloodof our Lord Jesus Christ, remembering what the Lord said:He whoeats my.flesh and drinks my blood has life everlasting;and:Do thisin remembrance of me”(I Rule,c.20).With even more emphasisour holy Father urged the Rulers and Magistrates(Epist.IV):\"Hence I advise you strongly,my lords, that you set aside all careand worry and that you readily receive the most holy Body and themost holy Blood of our Lord","cbCaicaHfz3pTYOP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicaHfz3pTYOP","pdf",3755000,36,"English","# THE MONTHLY CONFERENCE\n## THE HOLY
