It can’t get enough of them. Literally. Hang on. Does that make sense? Isn’t everything ArtReview Asia writes literal? Whatever. It’s heard people say it.‘Literally’. Not‘learnings’. Although you’re taking away some learnings now, aren’t you? And it’s not like people aren’t wandering around whatever place it is that art people hang out in boasting about their ‘learnings’or thanking people forgiving them‘learnings’in a way that makes you suspect they learned nothing really. But let’snot make this about ingratitude. Or cynicism. Anybody who knows ArtReview Asia knows it’s not into that. Either of them. Of course, it loves it when other people take away learnings from encountering it. Like you are now. That is simply the best. Better than all the rest. But it’s also the case that its ‘journey’ – it’s heard the art people mumbling about that incessantly (their own journeys obviously; not ArtReview Asia’s) in that place where they hang out, wherever that is–is full of learnings. Literally. Even as it gets older and wiser. ArtReview Asia knows–as if that was possible. But it didn’t mean that literally: obviously it’s ageless and infinitely wise. That’s why people like you read it. For its pronouncements. Like old people go to astrologers, you come to it. But all this began with a discussion of learnings, not superstition. Although ArtReview Asia can imagine scenariosin which a superstition turns out to be a learning. That’s partly how you undo the colonial ‘project’ after all. It’s heard the art people talk about that–both the undoing and the colonial ‘project’ too, in their dingy room where they hangout, as they book their flights to Art Basel Paris. But the point of all this. To keep things succinct. Is that it’s all a learning. Everything. Every part ofit. And perhaps it’s in the matter of whether or not that (‘everything’) becomes meaningful that the art comes in. Maybe the learning here is that you have to embrace the ‘not’ bit, as much as its opposite, in that last sentence. Was that too ‘deep’? Shit. ArtReview Asia didn’t mean it literally.
