Red brown chooks and white ducks fossick free range in nearby farmyards. \nAround the corner are country lanes and paddocks full of gnarly gum trees, grazing cattle with misty mornings and hazy golden sunsets – daily life is indeed a canvas. \nThe similarities between John’s paintings and those of Hans Heysen are unmistakable, but not intentional, when you discover that John resides in the Adelaide Hills on the outskirts of the charming village of Hahndorf, half an hour from Adelaide. It’s Hans Heysen country. Indeed one of John’s favourite trees is a beautiful old white gum tree, and the first one John painted when he moved to Adelaide. That same tree was sketched by Heysen long before John was born. John was amazed when the owner of the land informed him he was not the first to climb through the barbed wire fence to capture the tree in a moment of time. \nLike so many artists, John, born in Sydney in 1954, showed a remarkable drawing ability at a young age. He also felt a strange attraction to the Australian landscape. He chose amore stable career with the Central Mapping Authority before marrying; having children, then deciding later \n4 Artist’s Back to Basics \nin life his real love was painting. John made the huge step of turning professional in 2002. \nJohn’s wife Julie and son David manage the John McCartin Fine Art Gallery in Main Street, Hahndorf, freeing John to concentrate on painting. It’s hard for him to keep enough stock on the gallery walls, as John’s work is also represented at Morpeth Gallery, Hunter Valley, NSW. Strategic marketing and sell-out gallery exhibitions have led to a large number of sales over the past few years with his works going to private collections in England, Russia, USA, Japan, Holland and throughout Australia. \nNo particular theme dominates John’s work; instead he tries to capture the essence of whatever subject captivates him. His strong \ndrafting skill and accurate sense of tone enables him to capture his subject convincingly yet with an added dimension. People have often remarked at the effect of light and depth present in many of his paintings. Their comments in this regard have reinforced his aim to do just that – to create the illusion of light and space through the medium of paint on canvas. \nHe has been influenced greatly by artists such as Hans Heysen, Elioth Gruner and Arthur Streeton whose unpretentious works have inspired him over many years. To him the greatest of all challenges is to produce not only a work of great beauty but also of intense realism. This requires a high degree of tonal precision as well asan intuitive sense of colour, balance and design.
