Company initiates the first published collection ofart songs set to music exclusively by American women. The songs span the whole of thetwentieth century, and the majority of them are by living composers, with the notableexceptions of Amy Beach,Mary Howe, and Florence Price. Some of the songs presentedin this collection have been previously published, but have been out of print for varyingperiods of time;others are being published for the first time;some are by well-knowncomposers and others by lesser or little-known ones. All of the songs have been selectedon the basis of poetic choice, strength in text-setting,and accessibility in performance. \nV-97 Three Songs-Edith Borroff \nEdith Borroff(1925-)was born into a musical New York family, and was publiclyperforming Mozart piano sonatas at the age of four. She earned a Master's Degree incomposition from American University in 1948,but because of the prevailing prejudiceagainst women composers at that time, turned to an alternate career.Borroff began tostudy musicology under Louise Cuyler at the University of Michigan, and was awardedher doctorate there in 1958.Her major teaching appointments have been at the Universityof Wisconsin,Eastern Michigan University, and SUNY at Binghamton. She has writtennumerous books, articles, and papers on music history, but has also continued to composein varied genres.Among her many interesting vocal works are the Robert Burns “Song”,originally conceived for voice and string quartet, and the cycle Modern Love whichprovides a fresh musical slant to the poetry of Keats and Shelley. This cycle of sevensongs, from which “Dirge”and “Hate Song”were selected,is unified by a tone-row and bytextual interrelationships.Says Borroff,“My reading of ‘A Hate-Song:Improvised'gaverise to the whole concept of the cycle [and]...was thus creatively pivotal.” \nart songs byAmerican Wo Ruth C.Jriedberg,EditorVolume 3 \n# THREE\n\nSoNGS \nMUSIC INFORMATION CENTERVISUAL&PERFORMING
