Norway. There are nogalleries, museums, higher educational institutions or otherart institutions that may attract visiting artists. In this new environment the artists'general social links are more or lesscut off,and prior professional contacts and former experi-ences play a less important role. \nAs most artists live in rather large cities-in contrast to thevillage near the art center with its population of only 1500inhabitants,it is obvious that guest artists will have to lookfor, and investigate a new system of values. It is importantthat they are able to do so in order to work in a meaningfulway during their short residency. The visiting artists'approaches to the new situation differ and it always interest-ing to observe how they adjust. \nWhen Sham, the first guest artist from the United States, arrived at the NACD,it very soon became clear that he was,ata high level, able to adjust, and even to take advantage of hisnew situation. With an open mind and with great enthusiasm,he not only took possession of his studio and workshop, butalso, with a genuine interest, investigated the local cultureand surrounding nature. \nEven if the material was\"new\"-this was Sham's first meet-ing with the Nordic birch,he quickly found methods and \nways to use his artistic and technical skill and in his short res-idency produced a number of interesting art works. \nWith senses and mind wide open,Sham let the local sur-roundings and old traditions inspire the works produced atthe NACD.In some, maps of the area were used in combina-tion with local materials. In others, local traditions became asource of inspiration, resulting in art works combining localbuilding materials with a contemporary artistic expression. \nThe main work produced during his residency was a morethan 3.5-meter-tall wooden structure,a work combining dif-ferent species of wood with the Nordic traditional turf roof. This is also a work that creates associations with the many oldstructures found on the Norwegian coast where they serve assignals to the many ships sailing along the coast.Today thiscone-shaped structure is sited on the grounds of an interna-tional center where people from more than 80 nations meet. \nFor many years to come, this art work will remind thepublic of an artist who not only shows great artistic skills andan astonishing energy, but who also possesses a generositytowards his fellow human beings. \nARILD BERGSTROM \nDIRECTORNORDIC ARTISTS'CENTRE IN DALE,NORWAY \nDESIGNING METAPHOR \n# RECENT WORK BY FOON SHAM\n\nFor the last twenty years,Foon Sham has passionately pursuedhis love of material in his intricate wood sculptures, from theiroverall composition to how each component fits togetherWhat distinguishes his recent work is that he has increasinglyused the principles of design for their associative properties to \ncreate a complex,syn-thetic poetry.New motifs, including reaching forthe sky, fathoming theproperties of light, andharmonizing with natu-ral forms and forces, have emerged. In hisdeepening study of struc-ture and the realization \n# AN EVOLVING USE OF INTERIOR LIGHT SOURCES\n\nof a personal language, his sculptures have become morearchitectural in their reference to building as well as to thehuman body and the environment. And as before,Sham'sprocess begins and ends in mystery, guided by intuitiveinsights and his keen sense of analysis. \nThis newer, more integrated approach animates Houses atNight,an installation conceived during a two-week residencyin New Mexico in 1996.With no set ideas in mind,Shaminstead drew
