FoOT BA LL CLU B PLC \n# OFFICIAL OPENING\n\nOF THE NEW AR SEN AL TRAININ G GROUN D \nOCT OBE R 1l.1999 \nСОгзюнаяалО \nArsenal Football Club had acknowledgedfor a number of years the requirement tobuild a training ground that catered for theentire playing infrastructure of this ClubIt has only been in relatively recent timesthat professional football clubs have realisedthe necessity for a training base that istheirs exclusively. But,as all people workingin football will be only too aware, the gameitself has evolved into a multi-million poundindustry in the last decade and the need togive players the best possible environment toprepare for matches,is potentially thedifference between success and failure.Moving to the magnificent development yousee here today thus became an issue of thehighest priority. \nLike the majority of professional footballclubs,Arsenal has utilised a number oftraining grounds over the years.Notably asite at Tufnell Park either side of theSecond World War,on which football andcricket is still played today, and theUniversity College London Union's site atLondon Colney, where players have beennurtured and developed since 1961.Indeed,the Club is forever indebted toUCLfor allowing us to use their excellenttraining ground and it is a reflection of themagnitude of modern football, not theirfacilities and accommodating attitude, thatwe made the decision to move.In 1997,the Board decided to implementplans for the move. The site for the \n# PET E R HI LL-W oODCH A IRM AN\n\non a tour of some of finest trainingcomplexes available to any professionalclub in the Europe. After visiting Auxerre,Nantes and Bayern Munich,we returnedhome with an idea of how to amalgamatetheir best features into developing afootball training centre that would rivalthe very best we had seen. \nIn addition to Arsene, other members ofthe coaching staff at the Club have hadsignificant input into the venture.Thephysiotherapy team, led by Gary Lewin, had complete control over what the sitewould require for their crucial work andfitness coach,Tony Colbert, working inconjunction with Life Fitness(UK),hasequipped the gymnasium with everythingnecessary to keep the players in perfectcondition. \ntraining ground is,as many of you willrealise, adjacent to the UCL pitches, quiteliterally a stone's throw away.Afternegotiations with Hertsmere Council, planning consent was granted inSeptember;1998 and the architects anddesigners began their work on thedevelopment in November last year.Ofcourse, much of the inspiration for thedesign and lay-out of the development hascome from those committed professionals, but the contents and lay-out of the interiorwere almost entirely decided by ArseneWenger and his staff. \nIt has therefore been a team effort toproduce a facility that provides theoptimum environment for all members ofthe back-room staff at Arsenal FootballClub and it is appropriate that such acollective effort brings the Club backtogether at one base after a period offragmentation. \nIt is hoped that this impressive structure \nyou see here today will provide the solid \nfoundation on which this Club can \ncontinue to build sucess on the football \nfield in the new millennium. \nIt was 18 months ago that Arsene Wenger;Richard Marshall (architect),Peter Kelsall \nPeter Hill-Wood \nChairman \n(project manager)and myself, embarked \n# K ATE HOEY M PMINI
