The new qualification will continue to be for high achieving students, assessing mathematical skills in greater depth, particularly in algebraic manipulation and reasoning. It should be seen as a preparation to help students maximise their potential in further studies at level 3. \nIt was tempting to add Integration and Kinematics to the work on calculus and some centres did indicate a preference for these additions. However, the developers are mindful that such additions would increase the level 3 content of the specification considerably. Instead, the differentiation topic has been increased slightly, giving more coherence and completeness to the work tested. \nNumber \n1.2 \n‘The product rule for counting’, now on Higher tier GCSE is very suitable for a Level 2 assessment. This topic will enhance mathematical thinking and problem solving skills. \nAlgebra \n2.4, 2.5 \nComposite and inverse functions are in Higher tier GCSE, which coupled to the work on domain and range (2 .2, 2.3) allows more in depth study on this topic of functions. \n2.7 \nStudents have the opportunity to explore and understand the connection between finding coefficients by expanding brackets and Pascal’s triangle. This work in a ‘Pure’ context will help students appreciate, more fully, the Binomial Theorem and the Binomial Distribution in Statistics, when introduced at A Level. \n2.11 \nExamples using the factor theorem can now include rational numbers (rather than just integers) and other polynomials, rather than just cubic functions. \n2.13 \nExponential functions have been added to the interpretation and sketching of graphs allowing more variation in the assessment; and further practice in algebraic fluency. \n2.16 \nThe solution of simultaneous linear equations in three unknowns is added. This gives students further practice with algebraic manipulation; and these techniques can be used to find the nth term of quadratic sequences. \n2.18 \nSolving equations involving indices will allow students to develop mathematical thinking skills and algebraic techniques. \n2.20, 2.21, 2.22 \nThese specification references on Sequences have been separated to give more clarity of the type of questions that will be set. \nCalculus \n4.3 \nDifferentiation of integers [i.e. to](i.e. to) include negative powers – to allow more variation in the new problem solving application (4 .8) . \n4.5 \nAn understanding of increasing and decreasing functions was required in the legacy specification when determining the nature of stationary points; and these are now assessed in their own right. \n4.6 , 4.7 \nMany students already use the alternative method of finding d2~~ ~~ydx2 to determine the nature of stationary points; and so by including the second differential in this specification, instantaneous rates of change can be more fully discussed; and in this context the rate of change of the gradient function. Stationary points will be restricted to maxima and minima; and consequently finding points of inflection (using d2~~ ~~ydx2 = 0) will not be assessed. \n4.8 \nThe introduction of simple problems involving maxima and minima will give opportunities for problem solving and further develop algebraic skills.","cbCaiaAqr95xHwrI","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaAqr95xHwrI","pdf",481783,"English","# Rationale for redeveloped content\n# Number\n# Algebra\n# Calculus","[{\"question\":\"Why was the legacy 8360 specification not significantly changed?\",\"answer\":\"Initial feedback indicated little change was required or expected, so the redevelopment maintained the specification’s core direction while improving coherence and completeness.\"},{\"question\":\"What main assessment improvements are intended for Level 2 Further Maths?\",\"answer\":\"The redevelopment continues to assess mathematical skills in greater depth, especially in algebraic manipulation and reasoning, with further emphasis on problem-solving and mathematical thinking.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the calculus section change, especially differentiation?\",\"answer\":\"Differentiation assessment is reorganized and expanded: increasing/decreasing functions are assessed directly, second differential ideas are used to discuss rates of change, and stationary points focus on maxima and minima while points of inflection are not assessed.\"}]","AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths - rationale for redeveloped content | PDF",1792464623]
