summary for the Law Enforcement Professional\n\nChicago Expands Use of High-TechSurveillance Cameras In Crime Areas \nThe Chicago Police Department plans to significantly upgrade and ex- pand“Operation Disruption,”an in-novative strategy that places high- tech camera units in neighborhoods toreduce violent crime and narcoticsactivity by disrupting illegal narcoticsoperations that are the lifeblood ofany gang. \nThe expansion of Operation Dis-ruption comes seven months after 30camera units were installed in areasprone to gang violence and narcoticsales. \nPolice will develop 50 additionalunits that will be equipped with gun-shot detection technology to help of-ficers respond more quickly to callsof shots fired. \nThe original 30 units will be ret-rofitted with the same technology. The new units will be installed in thelate summer months. \n“This new equipment has provento be a strong crime deterrent,\"saidMayor Richard Daley. \n\"We're taking something thatworks and we're improving it.Op-eration Disruption has helped us reduce crime and calls for service, butit's just one strategy we've developedto reduce violent crime and makedrug dealing more difficult and lessprofitable for gang members,”\"said \nChicago Police First Deputy Super- intendent Dana V.Starks. \nIn the seven months since in- stalling the cameras, calls for servicerelating to narcotics reduced by 76percent in the immediate area ofwhere the pods were used.Addition-ally,serious crime fell 17 percent and“quality of life”criminal incidentsfell 46 percent. \nOperation Disruption uses high-tech cameras, which are mounted onlight poles,to create a visible deter-rent in communities that have experi-enced a high incidence of violentcrime. \nEvery unit is equipped with ahighly reflective,bullet-proof shield, flashing blue lights, the Chicago Po-lice logo and a 360-degree digitalcamera. \nNew gunshot detection technol-ogy will be installed in every pod toallow for a more rapid response toscenes where shots have been fired. \nWhen a shot is fired within a two-block radius of an Operdion Disrup-tion pod, sensors will immediatelydetect the acoustic signature of thegunshot and triangulate the locationof the incident. \nUsing its wireless communicationcapability, the pod sends a flash mes-sage back to the command room at \nChicago Police Headquarters with ashots fired notification that also in-cludes the approximate address of theincident.Personnel at headquarterswill immediately notify the 911 cen-ter,which will dispatch resources tothe vicinity. \n“Operation Disruption illustratesthat no other police department hasembraced technology as much as theChicago Police Department as a toolto make communities safer,\"saidStarks. \nCameras are placed in areasbased on data and intelligence gener-ated through the department's De-ployment Operations Center. \nWith the completion of the pilotprogram, police expect that the cam-eras will be moved with greater fre-quency in coming months based onnarcotics activity, intelligence aboutgang rivalries,viole","cbCaigqMSzj0LJ9c","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigqMSzj0LJ9c","pdf",1940755,"English","# IN THIS
