This case study investigated the major issues that contributed to first-year students’ academic struggles and how their participation in the Learning Contract course, guided by Appreciative Advising, addressed their needs and supported their development. Implications for advising practice are discussed. \nKeywords: : academic warning, first-year students, Appreciative Advising \nPlease direct inquires about this manuscript to: Emily E. Researchers have estimated that nearly 20% of college students at four-year institutions will be put on academic probation (also known as academic warning) at some point during their college career (Schudde & Scott-Clayton, 2016) and that 25% of students who leave higher education institutions do so because of academic dismissal (Houle, 2013) . First-year students may end up on academic probation because they do not have the knowledge, motivation, and/or study skills to be successful (Lee & Blankenship, 2019; Renzulli, 2015) . As a result, university administrators have sought to better understand predictors of student success and engagement in order to develop more effective interventions that increase students’ intention and ability to persist (Burnette, 2017) . Campuses have increasingly prioritized student success not only because it benefits students but also because graduation rates impact funding for many state colleges and universities (Capstick et al., 2019; McGrath & Burd, 2012) . \nIn the past decade, administrators have designed retention programs that support students both academically and socially to foster a sense of connection to the institution, a greater comfort with campus life, and a better understanding of what is required and expected of successful students (Demetriou & Schmitz-Sciborski, 2011; Travers et al., 2015) . Literature on mandatory programs for students on probation report mixed results regarding student success. McGrath and Burd (2012) found one required intervention course that yielded positive outcomes for students on probation; however, once students are on academic warning, they are substantially less likely to persist and ultimately graduate (Burke Leónet al, 2019) . \nAdvisors may play a crucial role in the success of students on warning, but to do so they must understand what students need and how to support their goals. This study investigated (a) the issues that contributed to first-year students being placedon academic warning (defined as dropping below a 2.0 grade-point average), and (b) how students attempted to move into good standing under the direction of a required course based on the Appreciative Advising Model (Bloom, Hutson, & He, 2008) and Sanford’s (1962) Theory of Challenge and Support. The research question that guided this study was: how does using Appreciative Advising with students in academic difficulty support their attempts to move into good academic standing? \nLiterature Review \nCollege students on academic warning usually need additional support to move into good academic standing (Earl, 1998; Butler et al., 2016) .
