Starts from a “document based” current state that often yields incomplete or conflicting requirements, then outlines a project that decomposes existing methods, improves requirements traceability, and adds parametric constraints for sizing. Defines driveline architecture components and system engineering constructs (V-Model, context and P-diagrams), then models requirements, functional/logical architecture, and functional decomposition mapped to logical blocks.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/research-report/","Research & Report",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/application-of-model-based-system-engineering-mbse-principles-to-an-automotive-driveline-sub-system-architecture-presented-by-robert-kraus-george-papaioannou-and-arun-sivan/657615/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/application-of-model-based-system-engineering-mbse-principles-to-an-automotive-driveline-sub-system-architecture-presented-by-robert-kraus-george-papaioannou-and-arun-sivan/657615.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Indoniesian Boy","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-30","2026-10-26",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",7,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"Why is the current automotive driveline engineering process considered problematic?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"The process is largely document-based, with complex requirements communicated through large amounts of electronic data, which can lead to incomplete or conflicting requirements, inefficiencies, redundancy, and errors. \nIntroduction & Project Summary \nCurrent State: Today’s automotive driveline system engineering process is “document based” \n● Complex system requirements and specifications are communicated through large amounts of electronic data \n● Often leads to incomplete or conflicting requirements \n● Inefficient, redundant, error prone \n● Running changes introduce potential problems \nProject Summary: \n● Obtained and deconstructed existing driveline system methods and sizing tools \n● Identified need for improved requirements traceability in driveline systems engineering \n● Created detailed driveline system model to apply the concepts of MBSE using SysML \n● Added parametric constraints for sizing calculations \n● Delivered functional MBSE model as proof of concept \nDriveline Definitions and Concepts \nArchitecture: Complete AWD Driveline \n● A driveline system links the powertrain output to the drive wheels \n● Primary function is to transmit drive torque from the powertrain to the ground (wheels) \n● Driveline subtypes such as FWD, RWD, AWD are treated as generalizations in SysML \nComponents: \n● Driveshaft / half shaft-transmits torque to front/rear or left/right \n● Axle-multiplies driveshaft torque and directs to wheels \n● Additional-Transfer case, PTU, disconnect device, U-joints, CV-joints, flex coupler Sizing: \n● Design optimization of each component, system and subsystem is the primary objective \n● A sizing tool converts input data into torque outputs for all vehicle variations and uses industry standard equations and some correction factors. \nSystem Engineering Concepts \n● V-Model: \n○ Top level requirements are decomposed to the subsystem and component levels, each with a specific validation plan flowing down the left side of the V and back up the right side. \n● Context Diagram: \n○ Represents system interactions to an external environment \n○ Interacting systems are defined as “black boxes” \n● P-Diagram: \n○ Expands and refines context for more detailed black boxes \n○ Includes detail on input signals, control factors, noise factors, outputs, and potential failure modes \n● MBSE \n○ Modeling Language (SysML, UML etc) \n○ Modeling Method \n○ Modeling Tool (Magicdraw, IBM Rational Rhapsody etc) \nV-Model \nContext Diagram \nP-Diagram \nModel Based System Engineering Concepts: System Requirements \n● Requirements define customer and stakeholder needs in technical terms \n● In SysML, system requirement statements are defined as objects \n● Each object contains the requirement text & a unique identifier \n● The requirement type defines the features a requirement can be associated with \n● Generalizations manage and allocate requirements through inheritance relationships \n● Requirements must be verified by test cases \n● Test cases are checkpoints, such as design reviews or physical tests \nStandard type requirements within SysML are used to provide rigor and clarity when defining the system \nModel Based System Engineering Concepts: Functional & Logical Architecture \n● Functions define what actions / activities must be accomplished or completed to achieve a desired outcome \n● An operation is a property of a block \n● A block is an abstract representation of any part of a system, like physical hardware or a signal \n● Functions are linked through logical relationships to the various subsystems and components \n● The logical architecture
