Applying online will ensure your application and payment is received by the Department in a timely manner and helps us to finalise your application more quickly. Check if you can apply online at \n[www.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship](www.homeaffairs.gov.au/citizenship) \nIf you apply using this paper form \nPlease read the information pages carefully. Pre-pay through ImmiAccount before posting your application to the Department (see page 27) . \nWe strongly advise that you keep a copy of your application and all attachments for your records. \nThere are 9 steps in the application process to become an Australian citizen. \nStep 1 Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria \n(see page 1) \nStep 2 Check that you meet the residence requirement \n(see page 2) \nStep 3 Gather your original documents and have copies of them certified (see pages 3–6) \nStep 4 Complete your application form and online payment (see pages 6–7) \nStep 5 Lodge your application, certified copies of your documents and your payment receipt (see page 7) \nStep 6 Prepare for the citizenship test (see page 7) Step 7 Attend your citizenship test appointment – ensure you bring a photo identity document \n(see page 8) \nStep 8 Await notification of the Department’s decision \n(see page 8) \nStep 9 Attend a citizenship ceremony and make the pledge \n(see page 8) \nYou must be in Australia when the Department of Home Affairs (the Department) makes a decision about your application except in certain, limited circumstances described in Step 2 – Residence requirement. \nIntegrity of application \nThe Department is committed to maintaining the integrity of the visa and citizenship programs. If you or a third party acting on your behalf provide, or have provided in a previous application, false or misleading information or documents (either knowingly or otherwise), this application may be refused. In addition, you may be prosecuted under the Migration Act 1958 and/or the Australian Citizenship Act 2007. If information or documents are found to be fraudulent or misleading after you become an Australian citizen, you may be prosecuted and maybe subject to revocation of your Australian citizenship. \nStep 1 – Eligibility \nYou should use this form if you meet the general eligibility criteria for Australian citizenship, that is, you: \n• are aged 18 years or over and under 60 \n• are a migrant who is a permanent resident \n• satisfy the residence requirement (see Step 2) \n• are likely to reside, or to continue to reside, in Australia or to maintain a close and continuing association with Australia, and \n• are of good character. \nNew Zealand citizens \nSpecial eligibility conditions apply for certain New Zealand citizens holding: \n• a Special Category visa (SCV), or \n• a New Zealand stream Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa and their New Zealand citizen family members holding a Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa. \nSee New Zealand citizens on page 8. \nChildren \nChildren under 16 years of age can be included on a responsible parent’s application form. If both parents are applying for citizenship, include children in one responsible parent’s application only. Any child included in your application must be a permanent resident at the time of application and time of decision. You must be the responsible parent of any child included in your application and under policy it is expected that children included live with you. You may be requested to provide evidence that you are the responsible parent. There is no cost forchildren under 16 years of age applying on the same form as a responsible parent. \nChildren are also able to apply in their own right.
