It focuses on showing complete steps and units, using dimensional analysis to manipulate quantities correctly, and performing arithmetic, percentages, scientific notation, and growth-rate computations without relying on a calculator. It also covers statistical terms, unit conversions, metric prefixes, negative numbers, pH via logarithms, per-capita interpretation, and practical graphing habits for accurate, coherent results.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/exam/","Exam",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/apes-math-tips-for-the-ap-exam/311936/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/apes-math-tips-for-the-ap-exam/311936.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Mia ","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-29","2026-09-20",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",13,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"Why should students show all work and all units on the AP exam?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"Because no work means no credit, and units provide valuable information that helps verify the correctness of calculations and results.","Answer",{"name":66,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":67},"What is dimensional analysis and why is it important for APES math?",{"text":68,"@type":64},"Dimensional analysis, also called factor label, is fitting numbers with units through multiplication and division to obtain desired results. Numbers lose their meaning too often when students become completely calculator-dependent. Practice! \n1) Show all work. No work, no credit. \n2) Show all units. Units provide valuable information. \n3) Be proficient at unit manipulation, also called dimensional analysis or factor label. This is oneof the most important math skills, because you will have to fit numbers with units together through multiplication and division to get the desired results. \n4) Add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers without a calculator. Multiplication and division are usually seen more than addition and subtraction. The math is able to be done without a calculator, but because students use calculators so much, even advanced students can be awkward when doing long division by hand. Watch the proper placement of the numbers. For 425/25, this is the setup ([from](from www.mathisfun.com)[ ](from www.mathisfun.com)[www.mathisfun.com](from www.mathisfun.com)): \n5) Develop good “math sense” or “math literacy.” The answers should make sense. If you calculate a cost of $50 billion per gallon of water, does this seem right? \n6) Know simple conversion factors such as the number of days in a year or hours in a day. Other good numbers to know: \nU.S. population = ~ 310 million (310,000,000) World population = ~ 6.8 billion (6,800,000,000) \n7) Know and convert metric prefixes. \n\n| T | tera- | 1012 | (trillion 1,000,000,000,000) |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| G | giga- | 109 | (billion 1,000,000,000) |\n| M | mega- | 106 | (million 1,000,000) |\n| k | kilo- | 103 | (1000) |\n| h | hecto- | 102 | (100) |\n| da | deka- | 101 | (10) |\n| d | deci- | 10-1 | (0.1) |\n| c | centi- | 10-2 | (0.01) |\n| m | milli- | 10-3 | (0.001) |\n| µ | micro- | 10-6 | (one-millionth 0.000001) |\n| n | nano- | 10-9 | (one-billionth 0.000000001) |\n\n8) Understand common statistical terms. The mean is the mathematical average. The median is the 50th percentile, which is the middle value in the distribution of numbers when ranked in increasing order. The mode is the number that occurs most frequently in the distribution. \n9) Be comfortable working with negative numbers. Going from-8 ºC to +2 ºC is a 10º change. \n10) Recognize units of area and volume, and be able to convert volumes. \n1 m = mm answer 􀀁 1000 \n1 m3 = mm3 answer 􀀁 13 m3 = 10003 mm3 (103)3 = 109 mm3 \nFor area conversions, square the number, square the unit. For volume conversions, cube the number, cube the unit. \n11) Calculate percentages. Example: 80/200 = 40/100 = 0.4 = 40% \n12) Put very large or very small numbers into scientific notation. \n310,000,000 = 310 million = 310 x 106 = 3.1 x 108 \n0.000 000 000 000 097 = 9.7 x 10-14 \n13) Work scientific notation problems without a calculator. Multiplication and division will be common. Multiplying numbers in scientific notation requires the exponents to be added. Dividing numbers in scientific notation requires exponents to be subtracted. \n14) Know growth rate calculations. Growth rate = [CRUDE BIRTH RATE + immigration)] \n– [(CRUDE DEATH RATE + emigration)] (see 2003 FRQ \\#2) CBR = crude birth rate = \\# births per 1000, per year \nCDR = crude death rate = \\# deaths per 1000, per year \n(CBR – CDR) / 10 = percent change \n15) Calculate percent change: \na) The rate of change (percent change, growth rate) from one period to another =[(V present -V past) / V past] * 100 (where V = value) \nb) Annual rate of change: take answer from step a) and divide by the number of years between past and present values \nExample: A particular city has a population of 800,000 in 1990 and a population of 1,500,000 in 2008. Find the growth rate of the population in this city: \nGrowth Rate = (1,500,000-800,000) / 800,000 * 100 = 700,000/800,000 * 100 = 87.5% Average Annual Growth Rate = 87.5% / 18 yea","cbCaivOnOj49Z2fr","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivOnOj49Z2fr","pdf",50971,"English","# Math work habits\n## Show work and units\n## Unit manipulation and dimensional analysis\n# Core calculation skills\n## Arithmetic without calculators\n## Percentages and percent change\n## Scientific notation\n## Growth rate and doubling time\n## Half-life calculations\n## pH and logarithms\n# Concepts and conversions\n## Metric prefixes and conversions\n## Statistical terms\n## Negative numbers\n## Area, volume, and unit conversions\n# Data interpretation and graphing\n## Per capita meaning\n## Graphing tips","[{\"question\":\"Why should students show all work and all units on the AP exam?\",\"answer\":\"Because no work means no credit, and units provide valuable information that helps verify the correctness of calculations and results.\"},{\"question\":\"What is dimensional analysis and why is it important for APES math?\",\"answer\":\"Dimensional analysis, also called factor label, is fitting numbers with units through multiplication and division to obtain desired results.
