Rather, these APA Guidelines are aspirational, not mandatory, and may not be applicable to every professional situation faced by psychologists. \nPreface \nThis document outlines revised Guidelines for Clinical Supervision of students in health service psychology education and training programs. The goal was to capture optimal performance expectations for psychologists who supervise and those preparing to supervise. It is based on the premise that supervisors a) strive to achieve competence in the provision of clinical supervision, b) employ a competency-based, metatheoretical approach1 to the clinical supervision process, and c) clinical supervision is a distinct professional competence that requires dedicated training. \nThe initial Guidelines for Clinical Supervision were developed as a resource to inform education and training regarding the implementation of competency-based supervision and were approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) Council of Representatives in 2014. These revised Guidelines for Clinical Supervision build on the robust literature on competency-based education and clinical supervision. They are organized around six domains: supervisor competence; multicultural orientation; relationships; teaching and learning strategies; problems of professional competence, and ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations. These updated Guidelines for Clinical Supervision represent the collective effort of the original taskforce (2014), and a working group convened in 2024 by the APA Board of Educational Affairs. \n1 A competency-based approach is metatheoretical and refers to working within any theoretical or practice modality, systematically considering the growth of specific competencies in the development of competence. \nII AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION APA GUIDELINES FOR CLINICAL","cbCainS0QZ4wpVUm","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainS0QZ4wpVUm","pdf",440597,38,"English","# Executive Summary\n# Domain A: Supervisor Competence\n# Domain B: Multicultural Orientation\n# Domain C: Supervisory Relationship\n# Domain D: Teaching and Learning Strategies\n# Domain E: Problems of Professional Competence\n# Domain F: Ethical, Legal, and Regulatory Considerations\n# Conclusion\n# References\n# Appendix A: Definitions","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of the revised APA Clinical Supervision Guidelines?\",\"answer\":\"To delineate essential, aspirational practices for providing clinical supervision in health service psychology using a competency framework that supports supervisee competence and protects clients/patients, the public, and supervisees.\"},{\"question\":\"Are the guidelines legally binding or mandatory?\",\"answer\":\"No. The document states it does not establish enforceable legal standards and is aspirational rather than mandatory.\"},{\"question\":\"How are the guidelines structured for supervision practice?\",\"answer\":\"They are organized around six domains: supervisor competence; multicultural orientation; supervisory relationships; teaching and learning strategies; problems of professional competence; and ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations.\"}]","APA Guidelines for Clinical Supervision in Health Service Psychology - August 2025 | PDF",1789981404,96]
