The content of this course is largely determined by the AP Course Description and curricular requirements. Students develop and demonstrate their Spanish proficiency in the three communicative modes: 1) interpersonal, 2) interpretive, and 3) presentational. They also develop their Spanish skills in the five goal areas as outlined by the national standards (communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities) . This rigorous course is conducted entirely in Spanish. All students are expected to use Spanish exclusively with their teacher and peers as needed in all activities and in all modes of linguistic functions. This course is comparable to a third-year university course, fifth and sixth semester. Students are encouraged to take the AP Language and Culture Exam. Students must successfully complete four years of high school Spanish before enrolling in the AP Spanish course. In accordance with the new AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam format, this course will be taught using a thematic approach with each theme being incorporated in each trimester of the course. Every 2-3 weeks, a new theme is introduced; however, interconnectedness of themes is expected and encouraged. Within the basis theme, students work on all aspects of communication: Interpretive, interpersonal and presentational. In lieu of a test for each theme, students are evaluated based on various assignments graded according to the AP World Language and Culture Scoring Guidelines available in the AP Spanish Language and Culture Course and Exam Description. \nCourse Outline \nThe core textbook materials for instruction of activities, assignments and the basis for the AP Spanish Language course are Abriendo Paso Gramática (Díaz, Nadel, and Collins) ISBN 0-13-166131-0, 2007, Prentice Hall) Abriendo Paso Temasy Lecturas (Díaz and Nadel, ISBN 13:978-0-13-323800-6, 2014, Pearson Education, Inc.), AP Spanish Preparing for the Language and Culture Examination (Díaz, ISBN 9780133238013, 2014, Pearson Education, Inc), and AP Spanish Preparing for the Language Examination (Díaz, Nadel, and Collins, Third Edition, 2007, Prentice Hall) .
