This narrative can be used for report card overviews. |
| AP Seminar is an innovative diploma program from the College Board that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges and universities. In AP Seminar, students investigate real-world issues from multiple perspectives, gathering and analyzing information from various sources in order to develop credible and valid evidence-based arguments.
In Unit 1, there is an emphasis on teaching the skills required for the End-of-Course Exam, which are the prerequisite skills to the research-and presentation-based Performance Tasks. We begin with identifying how effective arguments are built , with a thesis, claims connected by a line of reasoning, and supporting evidence. Students are able to first identify these structures and then analyze the effectiveness of them.
From this foundation, students begin to construct their own arguments , developing a unique perspective rooted in synthesizing others’ points of view. Students practice this skill of synthesis in both formal essay writing and shorter in-class activities and assignments. Students analyze arguments in various forms and from a range of sources, from newspaper opinion articles to scholarly journal articles to poems and works of art.
Meanwhile, students continue to build their own background knowledge in order to situate issues within a broader context and acknowledging the full complexity of topics. Students read The New York Times’ front page daily in order to expose themselves to a broad range of issues and discover their own academic interests and passions. Moreover, when learning all these foundational skills in Unit 1 , students investigate two central themes—names and climate change—from a myriad of inter-disciplinary lenses and perspectives.
Students also begin to develop their public speaking skills. At regular intervals, students practice engaging an audience through execution of delivery techniques such as eye contact, vocal variety, movement, and energy.
At the end of the unit, students engage in a 4-week Practice Performance Task 1 , a scaled-down version of the AP Seminar Performance Task 1: Team Project & Presentation. It will take the form of a United Nations Climate Change Summit, in which students, in teams of 3-4, must adopt the perspective of a specific country. Each student will write a 500-word Individual Research Report on a specific lens—political, economic, social/cultural, or environmental—before joining together as a team to synthesize all information into one coherent team position. Each team will present a 4-minute opening statement team presentation before the class engages in a full United Nations simulation, with the goal of slowing the increase of global temperature. Students will take what they have learned from the simulation and turn their reflections into a final argumentative synthesis essay to reinforce the skills of EOC Part B, highlighting the interconnectedness of the AP Seminar assessment tasks. |

| ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS & ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS | |
| --- | --- |
| List the essential questions for the theme.
