In this class, you will be expected to think critically, write thoughtfully, and speak confidently. This course entails a prodigious amount of work but will also reap tremendous rewards for diligent students. \nThe core of this class is inquiry and our class value of Exploration. You will synthesize information from multiple sources, pose your own questions for research, develop your own unique perspective in written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as a part of a team. By the end of this course, you will produce at least 2 college-level research papers and presentations. \nAP Seminar is the first half ofthe AP Capstone program, and students who successfully complete AP Seminar this year will progress to AP Research during their senior year. The skills and content you will master in AP Seminar fulfill all aspects of our school’s mission: \nSchool Mission \nInclude \nAs the 17th century British historian Thomas Fuller once noted,“All things are difficult before they are easy.” This will certainly be true of AP Seminar, so embrace the difficulty. I look forward to a phenomenal year of grit, brilliance, and inspiration. \nCourse Expectations \nYour success in AP Seminar will be directly related to your ability to manage your time effectively and meet deadlines. Unlike your other courses, the work in AP Seminar cannot be confined to a textbook chapter or a problem set. Classes will focus on document analysis, and the expectation is that you come to class prepared by coming ready to discuss the readings. Research essays and presentations will be divided into long-term deadlines (e.g., research and find 5 sources on a topic or add 2 pages to your rough draft) that you must meet in order to stay on track with your AP assessment tasks. Additionally, you will often be working in teams, and your teammates will rely on you to fulfill your responsibilities on time. \nWriting is a large component of AP Seminar. Writing is a process, and everyone has different strengths and abilities as writers. Similarly, everyone will start and end in different places. We will work together to strengthen writing skills, and we will also work as a class to help each other. Use readings to emulate the writing of different styles that are effective in both argument and style. \nMoreover, presentation is a centerpiece of AP Seminar. Being able to speak your truth compellingly and convincingly to others is a life skill that will serve you well beyond high school and college. Everyone has a unique speaking style, and we will work this year to become effective and persuasive communicators. \nAs soon as you find yourself overwhelmed or falling behind, advocate for yourself and reach out for support. There is much that we can do to get you back on track after 1 missed deadline, but you will put both your academic and AP success in jeopardy if you miss 2 or more deadlines. \nGrading in AP Seminar \n\n| Category | % of grade | Assignment Types | Re-mastery Policy |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| Homework | 15% | Daily prepwork assignments, readings | None.
