I hope you’re excited for the opportunity to work hard and to learn physics at a college level. \nPhysics is awesome. It is a field of study that spans everything from the smallest particles we know to exist (quarks and leptons, quantum mechanics) to the universe itself (relativity, black holes, galaxies) . AP Physics 1 exists in the middle of those extremes, analyzing objects we can see and interact with on an everyday basis. Topics include linear motion, forces, energy, power, momentum, torque and rotation, oscillations, and fluids. \nPhysics is also a field that involves a lot of problem solving. Each problem is its own puzzle to solve. And solving problems is super fun! You have to know the physics, but also have the mathematical and reasoning tools required to approach the problems logically. Which takes us to… \nThe Purpose of our AP Physics 1 Summer Assignment \nTake a look at the sample AP Physics 1 multiple choice questions on the back of this page. What stands out to you about these questions? \nYou may notice that most answer choices have multiple variables in the answers instead of just numerical answers (Calculators won’t help on most of these problems. In fact, you will use your calculator a lot less than you probably suspect) . You may also notice some trig functions in one question, and explanations needed in another question. You certainly noticed that these questions may look significantly more complex than questions in previous science tests you’ve taken. \nSo this summer assignment gets into some of the math and reasoning skills that we’ll use throughout the year, including unit conversions, manipulating algebraic equations, proportional reasoning, and basic right triangle trigonometry. That way, when we start learning actual physics in August, you’ll be ready with the basic skills you need to dive into some challenging problems. \nThe AP Physics 1 Exam \nAll students enrolled in AP Physics 1 are required to take the exam, which is comprised of two sections: \nThere are actually four AP Physics classes that College Board offers: AP Physics 1 & 2, C: Mechanics, and C: Electricity and Magnetism. AP Physics 1 & 2 are algebra-based, and the AP Physics C classes are calculus-based. AP Physics 1 is meant to be an introductory physics class for all students. \nLogistics of this AP Physics Summer Assignment \nThere are four lessons in this assignment, as well as a FlipGrid posted on Google Classroom to introduce yourself. The due date for each lesson is posted in GC. For each lesson, you will watch one video (linked on GC and the digital version of this doc), take notes on it, then complete the practice problems. Take a photo or scan of your notes and problems (I recommend using an app like Genius Scan for this!), then upload it to GC. \nAfter each due date, I’ll post an answer key, which you’ll use to make corrections to your work. Copying my work and answers does not help you, of course. The goal of the corrections is for you to get feedback on your work and correct any misconceptions you have. \nThe practice problems for each lesson include problems from that lesson, as well as review from the previous sections. The problems are mixed together intentionally because research on learning shows that doing mixed practice helps us retain skills for longer than doing the same problem type over and over does. \nIf there is any reason that you may need extra time to complete an assignment or to make corrections (e.g., you’re gone on a summer internship or program), you need to email me in advance. Also, I recommend not doing all the work right at the beginning of the summer. It’s best if you spread it out, rather than having the full two month break between this work and the start of the school year. I suggest an August 1 start date. \nFinally, get help early if you need it on any se","cbCaimU6RByQJzgU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimU6RByQJzgU","pdf",1729616,16,"English","# The Purpose of our AP Physics 1 Summer Assignment\n## The AP Physics 1 Exam\n## Logistics of this AP Physics Summer Assignment\n# Lesson 1 — Metric Unit Conversions\n## Lesson 1 Practice Problems\n# Lesson 2 — Function Types & Proportional Reasoning\n## Lesson 2 Practice Problems","[{\"question\":\"What is the goal of the AP Physics 1 summer assignment?\",\"answer\":\"The assignment builds the math and reasoning skills needed for AP Physics 1, including unit conversions, algebra, proportional reasoning, and right-triangle trig, so students can tackle challenging problems when classes begin.\"},{\"question\":\"How are students expected to complete each lesson?\",\"answer\":\"For each lesson, students watch a linked video, take notes, complete the practice problems, then upload photos/scans of notes and answers to Google Classroom.\"},{\"question\":\"How do corrections work after each due date?\",\"answer\":\"After the due date, the instructor posts an answer key for students to use for corrections, aiming to provide feedback and help correct misconceptions rather than copying work.\"}]","AP Physics 1 - Summer Assignment | PDF",1790718176]
