Course Description: Content of this class is based on the AP Music Theory Course Description. A major component of any college music curriculum is a course introducing the student to musicianship, theory, musical materials, and procedures. This course integrates aspects of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form, musical analysis, elementary composition, and, to some extent, history and style. Musicianship skills such as dictation and other listening skills, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony are considered an important part of the theory course. The student’s ability to read and write musical notation is fundamental to this course. It is also assumed that the student has acquired at least basic performance skills in voice or on an instrument. \nII. Course Objectives: The ultimate goal of an AP Music Theory course is to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented ina score. The achievement of this goal may be best promoted by integrated approaches to the student’s development of aural skills, sight-singing skills, written skills, compositional skills, and analytical skills through listening exercises, performance exercises, written exercises, creative exercises and analytical exercises. Aural and written analysis and study of a wide variety of vocal and instrumental music from the standard Western tonal repertoires is utilized throughout the course. \nIII. Requirements: \n1. Texts: \nBenward, Bruce, and Marilyn Saker. Music in Theory and Practice , Textbook and Workbook, 7th ed. \nNew York: McGraw-Hill, 2003 (School Provided) \nBenward, Bruce, and J. Timothy Kolosick. Ear Training: A Technique for Listening, 7th ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 2004. (School Provided) \nNancy Scoggin. AP Music Theory Review and Practice Test, Textbook and Workbook, 1stor 2nd ed. New York: Barron’s, 2010 (Student Provided) \n2. Readings, aural exercises, written homework and written exercises will be given with each concept taught. Composition assignments will be used to reinforce concepts. A home keyboard/piano is not required but could be helpful in these assignments. \n3. This course will require a great deal of class participation. Students will be required to sing and play for classmates. Students will be expected to practice sight-singing exercises at least one hour per week (30 minutes in class, 30 minutes homework) . There will be daily discussions of assignments and concepts. An atmosphere of acceptance will be essential in the success of the class. \n4. This course will require many listening activities to improve ear training each week both in class and for homework. It is highly recommended that a CD/Tape/MP3 player be available at home for these \nassignments. There are also many free ear training websites that will be utilized both in class and at home. \n5. Exams – Exams will be given periodically to assess learning. Exams will be written and aural. These exams will range in point value from 25 – 200 points depending on the type/length of exam. \n6. Notebook – Students will need to keep a notebook for lecture notes, handouts, assignments, etc. \nStudents will need a 3-ring ½-1” bind for chorale writing assignments. Both notebooks should be organized and each assignment/notes labeled clearly for future reference. \nIV. Grading: The nine weeks grade will be determined by 90% daily grade and 10% nine weeks test grade. The daily grade will be based on a total points system.
