But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.” James 1: 2-7 \nWelcome to \nAP Literature and Composition \n2025-2026 Mrs. Swad \n[swadr@bocachristian.org](swadr@bocachristian.org) \n“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 \nRequired Summer Reading and Recommended Preparation \nIn order to prepare for AP Literature and Composition, please read the assignments and instructions below. Make sure to email me at swadr@bocachristian.org and ask any questions you may have. I will answer no questions about directions after August 9, because that means you have waited until the last minute to begin your summer assignment. Summer work is due on Monday, August 11, 2025. All late work will be penalized by 25 points per day. \nWhy summer reading? \n• To help build confidence and competence as readers of complex texts \n• To give you, when you enter the class in the fall, an immediate basis for discussion of literature ‐ elements like theme, narrative, viewpoint, symbolism, plot structure, etc. \n• To set up a basis for comparison with other works we will read during the year \n• To provide you with the beginnings of a repertoire of works you can write about on the AP Lit exam next spring \n• Last (but not least), to enrich your mind and stimulate your imagination \nWhy annotations? \nIn order to prepare for in-depth discussion and analysis of these novels and to prepare for the in-class essay, I expect you to annotate both reading assignments. You will be able to use your own copy of the novel for an in-class essay. The more you annotate-in a way that is meaningful to you-the more you will get out of your reading. At the very least, you should actively annotate using the following four recommendations: \n1. Always read with a pencil in hand. Having something to write with helps me focus. I love being ready to underline a beautiful or insightful phrase or make a comment in the margin. \n“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 \n2. Create a character list on the inside cover of the novel. Especially in longer novels, this helps to keep track of each character. I include page numbers when key characters are introduced and when significant events occur. (when applicable) \n3. List a few key plot points at the end of each chapter. \n4. Actively look for the messages (themes) from the author and note them. \nWhat should these annotations look like? \nREAD THIS FIRST: The Harvard College Library annotation guide: “Interrogating Texts: Six reading habits to Develop in your First Year at Harvard.” \n[http://guides.library.harvard.edu/sixreadinghabits](http://guides.library.harvard.edu/sixreadinghabits) \n◼ Mark Patterns, Devices, and Techniques: Look for patterns and label them (motifs, diction, syntax, symbols, images, behavior, whatever) . Explain the effects of syntax, tone, diction, point of view, figurative language, and other techniques on the text. \n◼ Mark passages that seem to jump out at you because they suggest an important idea or theme‐ or for any other reason (an arresting figure of speech or image, an intriguing sentence pattern, a striking example of foreshadowing, a key moment in the plot, a bit of dialogue that reveals character, clues about the setting etc.) . \n◼ Mark phrases, sentences, or passages that puzzle, intrigue, please, or displease you. Ask questions and make comments. Talk back to the text. \n◼ Pay attention to allusions. Familiarize yourself with references to specific passages from other works (the Bible will play an important role in both novels) . Looking up a brief overview of an allusion can ill","cbCaidysMHUmng8A","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidysMHUmng8A","pdf",1169595,"English","# Required Summer Reading and Recommended Preparation\n## Why summer reading?\n## Why annotations?\n## What should these annotations look like?\n## Warning against plagiarism and using AI for completing assignments\n# Part 1 - Reading and Annotation","[{\"question\":\"When are the summer assignments due, and how are late submissions handled?\",\"answer\":\"Summer work is due on Monday, August 11, 2025.
