Unfortunately, in the 21st century, rhetoric tends to be seen as something separate from daily communication. However, all human activities are rhetorical, whether or not we are conscious of it. In this class, we focus on rhetorical analysis of a variety of texts from the 16th to the 21st centuries; we will synthesize our own arguments on a variety of subjects; and we will develop advanced reading, writing, and rhetorical strategies that will help you in college and beyond. \nUnderstand the AP Lang & Comp Exam \nMay’s AP Exam is important, but it is only a test on ONE day. Overall class performance is a far better indicator of your diligence, dedication, and insight into college-level writing success. \nThe test itself is 3 hours and 15 minutes. \nSection I: Multiple Choice \n- One hour for 45 multiple choice questions \n- 23-25 Reading questions \n- 20-22 Writing questions \n- This counts as 45% of the final score. \n5 readings (sets) with skill based questions \n\n| Set | \\# of Questions Per Set | Skills Assessed & Units |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| 1 | 11-14 | Reading skills (1, 3, 5, 7) |\n| 2 | 11-14 | Reading skills (1, 3, 5, 7) |\n| 3 | 7-9 | Writing Skills (2, 4, 6, 8) |\n| 4 | 7-9 | Writing skills (2, 4, 6, 8) |\n| 5 | 4-6 | Writing skills (2, 4, 6, 8) |\n\nSection II: Free-Response Questions (FRQs) \n- 2 hours, 15 minutes (includes one 15-minute reading period) for 3 essay questions: \n- Q1 (Synthesis/55 min.) \n- Q2 (Rhetorical Analysis/40 min.) \n- Q3 (Argument Essay/40 min.) \n- These three essays count as 55% of the final score. \nQ1–Synthesis Essay \nThe Synthesis essay is much like the Position Paper you wrote for your summer assignment. FRQ 1 presents students with six to seven sources organized around a specific topic. Two of the provided sources are visual, including at least one quantitative (data-driven) source. The remaining sources are text-based excerpts containing about 500 words per source. Students are asked to write an essay that synthesizes material from at least three of the provided sources and develop their own position on the topic. This question assesses students’ ability to do the following: \n● Respond to the prompt with a thesis that may establish a line of reasoning. \n● Provide evidence from at least three of the provided sources to support the thesis. Indicate clearly the sources used through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary. Sources may be cited as Source A, Source B, etc., or by using the description provided in parentheses on the prompt page. \n● Explain the relationship between the evidence and the thesis. \n● Demonstrate an understanding of the rhetorical situation. \n● Use appropriate grammar and punctuation in communicating the argument. \n● EVERY Q1 prompt will contain the following stable wording, so you should acquaint yourself with this wording so it doesn’t surprise you on exam day or during in-class writing: \n○ Carefully read the following six sources, including the introductory information for each source. \n○ Write an essay that synthesizes material from at least three of the sources and develops your position on [specific subjectfrom the prompt introduction] \nQ2–Rhetorical Analysis Essay \nThe Rhetorical Analysis essay presents students with a passage of nonfiction prose of approximately 600-800 words. Students are asked to write an essay that analyzes the writer’s rhetorical choices. This question assesses students’ ability to do the following: \n● Respond to the prompt with a thesis that analyzes the writer’s rhetorical choices. \n● Select and use evidence to develop and support the line of reasoning. \n● Explain the relationship between the evidence and the thesis. \n● Demonstrate an understanding of the rhetorical situation. \n● Use appropriate grammar and punctuation. \n● EVERY Q2 prompt will contain th","cbCaia5YT9lHmXxC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaia5YT9lHmXxC","pdf",194856,"English","# Understand Rhetoric and Rhetorical Situation\n# Understand the AP Lang & Comp Exam\n## Section I: Multiple Choice\n## Section II: Free-Response Questions (FRQs)\n### Q1–Synthesis Essay\n### Q2–Rhetorical Analysis Essay\n### Q3–Argument Essay\n# Task Verbs Used in FRQs","[{\"question\":\"What is the overall focus of the course described in the guide?\",\"answer\":\"The guide focuses on rhetorical analysis of texts from the 16th to 21st centuries and developing advanced reading, writing, and rhetorical strategies, including synthesizing arguments on varied subjects.\"},{\"question\":\"How is the AP Lang \\u0026 Comp exam structured by sections and time?\",\"answer\":\"The exam lasts 3 hours and 15 minutes.
