You do not have to turn in anything for parts I and II. In the second week of school, you will be given a quiz covering this material. Feel free to email me questions \nPart I: This year in APES is allowing calculators, but we still need to practice important formulas, metric conversions, and data analysis. \nContents \nAverages, Percentages and Percent change, Metric Units, Scientific Notation, Dimensional Analysis Reminders \n1. Write out all your work, even if it’s something really simple. This is required on the APES exam so it will be required on all your assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests as well. \n2. Include units in each step. Your answers always need units and it’s easier to keep track of them if you write them in every step. \n3. Check your work. Go back through each step to make sure you didn’t make any mistakes in your calculations. Also check to see if your answer makes sense. For example, a person probably will not eat 13 million pounds of meat in a year. If you get an answer that seems unlikely, it probably is. Go back and check your work. \nMetric Units: YOU MUST MEMORIZE THE METRIC CONVERION CHART \nKilo-, centi-, and milli-are the most frequently used prefixes of the metric system. You need to be able to go from one to another without a calculator. You can remember the order of the prefixes by using the following sentence: Good Morning King Henry Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk. Since the multiples and divisions of the base units are all factors of ten, you just need to move the decimal to convert from one to another. \nPercent Change = ꟾ New – Original ꟾ X 100 \nOriginal \n1) If you scored a 1090 on your first PSAT and 1210 on your second PSAT. What was your percent improvement? \n2) If one termite can destroy 1.2mg of wood per day, how many kilograms of wood can 10 termites destroy in 1 week? \n3) What is 70% of 640? \n4) 400 kilograms= milligrams \n6) 600 mm = cm \n5) 7 grams = Gigagrams \n7) 25 centigrams = kilograms \n8) 10 Megameters = millimeters \nWrite the following in scientific notation \n9) 394 billion 10) 0.000070202 \nComplete the following calculations \n11) 4.2 x 105 + 5.05 x 109 12) 2 x 105 X 5.05 x 109 \n13) If I can run 6km in 24 minutes, how many cm can I run in 5 hours? \n14) Fourteen percent of a 55,000 acre forest is destroyed by the invasive pine weevil. \nHow many acres of the forest were not destroyed? \n15) How many acres of the forest were destroyed? \n16) If termites destroyed 42 acres of forest in 2015 and 65 acres of forest in 2016, what was the percent increase in forest destruction? \n17) A pesticide was sprayed on a portion of a forest. The pesticide killed 25,000 termites. This is 71% of the local termite population. What is the total termite population? \n18-22) Answer the following questions using the following statement, your knowledge of the scientific method, and the graph below. \nA clam farmer has been keeping records concerning the water temperature and the number of clams developing \nfrom fertilized eggs. The data is recorded below. \n18) What is the dependent variable? \n19) What is the independent variable? \n20) What is the optimum (best) temperature for clam development? \n21) What is the average temperature in this experiment? \n\n| Water Temperature in oC | Number of\u003Cbr>developing clams |\n| --- | --- |\n| 15 | 75 |\n| 20 | 90 |\n| 25 | 120 |\n| 30 | 140 |\n| 35 | 75 |\n| 40 | 40 |\n| 45 | 15 |\n| 50 | 0 |\n\n22) Make a line graph of the data. \nPart II: Chemistry : Memorize these formulas \nCO2-carbon dioxide CO-carbon monoxide H2CO3-carbonic acid C6 H 12O6-glucose CH4-methane \nCaCO3-calcium carbonate H2-hydrogen gas \nH2O-water \nN2-nitrogen gas NO-nitric oxide NO2-nitrogen dioxide N2O-nitrous oxide NO2- -nitrite \nNO3- -nitrate \nNH3-ammonia \nNH4+ -ammonium O2-oxygen gas O3-ozone; \nP-phosphorus PO4-3-phosphate S-sulfur \nSO2-sulfur dioxide SO3-sulfite \nSO4-2-sulfate \nH2S","cbCailfBl1qm1LWt","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailfBl1qm1LWt","pdf",323564,"English","# Summer Assignment Overview\n# Part I: Math Skills and Metric Units\n## Percent change and conversions\n## Scientific notation and practice calculations\n## Experimental data questions (dependent/independent/optimum/graph)\n# Part II: Chemistry Formulas to Memorize\n# Part III: Experimental Design\n## Procedure and uncertainty\n## Data, graph, and conclusion\n# Part IV: Documentary Episodes and Episode 1 Summary","[{\"question\":\"What work practices are required for Part I on the APES assignments and exams?\",\"answer\":\"Write out all work, include units in each step, and check each step to confirm calculations and that results make sense.\"},{\"question\":\"What are the main study areas in Part I?\",\"answer\":\"Averages, percentages and percent change, metric units and conversions, scientific notation, dimensional analysis reminders, plus calculations and data questions based on the clam temperature dataset.\"},{\"question\":\"What tasks must be completed in Part III experimental design?\",\"answer\":\"Design and run a quantitative experiment with a clear step-by-step procedure and equipment list, discuss assumptions and uncertainty and minimization, record data in a labeled table, create a hand-drawn graph, and write a brief conclusion.\"}]","AP Environmental Science Summer Fun - Assignment | PDF",1789902274,15]
