Bio/ IB Bio HL 1 Summer Assignment 2026-27 \nSign up for Google Classroom: iwbcsdeb [My email: wiedekerg@scsdoh.org](My email: wiedekerg@scsdoh.org) \n[Welcome to AP/IB Biology](Welcome to AP/IB Biology)! \nI look forward to meeting you and/or seeing you again. My name is Mr. Wiedeke and I have been teaching at Springfield High School for the past six years, but I'm sure we'll get to know more about each other as the course progresses. \nThe two main goals of AP Biology are to help you develop a conceptual framework for modern biology, and to gain a deeper appreciation of science as a process (as opposed to an accumulation of facts) . Because of the rapid pace of discovery in the life sciences, our primary emphasis is on developing an understanding of unifying concepts that connect the major topics of biology. \nThe AP Biology Curriculum centers around the four Big Ideas, and you will need to not only know these but also understand how they all relate: \n-Big Idea 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life. \n-Big Idea 2: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis. \n-Big Idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes. -Big Idea 4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties. \nWhat to do before the first day of school: \nWhile purchasing these books is not mandatory in any way, shape, or form, you may find them extremely helpful in preparing you for the end-of-course AP Biology Exam. \n• Download a PDF version of the textbook Campbell Biology 12th Edition using the link in Google Classroom.. Hardcover copies of the book will be available in class, but this way, you will always have access to the textbook. YOU WILL NEED THIS TO ANSWER SOME SECTIONS OF THIS ASSIGNMENT! \n• Purchase Pearson Education Test Prep Series AP Biology for Campbell Biology 12th edition AP 2020 Holtzclaw, Holtzclaw. *This might not be available right away, but I will keep checking* There are other test prep books you could use as well, though this is aligned with our book and is generally highly regarded. If you purchase a different test prep book, it must be the NEWEST edition because the course was redesigned recently. My other recommendation: Cracking the AP Biology Exam 2020, Premium Edition, \n• AP Biology was designed by a select group of college professors and high school science teachers to be equivalent to an introductory college biology course. Visit the College Board site below to explore what an AP Biology course is like: \no [https://apstudent.coIIegeboard.org/apcourse/ap-biology](https://apstudent.coIIegeboard.org/apcourse/ap-biology) \n• Complete the 3 parts of the summer assignment on the next pages! While I wouldn't recommend procrastinating until the last day, I would suggest holding off on this until the end of July or the beginning of August, as it won't take a lot of time (maybe all told 2-4 hours, depending on the speed you watch the videos), but I want it to be relatively fresh in your mind. Don't wait until the day before class starts, though...As I don't want you to burn yourself out before we even begin \nAP Summer Assignment 2026-27 \nIntroductory Letter-Requested ASAP \nWe will engage in a great deal of collaborative learning. It is important that you, as a young adult getting ready to enter college or the workforce, work on email communication. I expect that you might struggle throughout the year; that is totally okay, as AP Biology can be difficult, and I hope that you will keep an open line of communication with me.
