Research discussed at a panel at the AAAS meeting indicates that strong students may initially rely on greater memory capacity to solve problems methodically, but under pressure they shift to inefficient shortcuts. Additional findings show that anxiety can directly occupy working memory, reducing available cognitive resources for the task. Efforts to suppress anxiety emotions do not resolve the problem, and individuals with higher intelligence may expend even more resources to manage anxiety.
