It consists of 18 autonomous Colleges of outstanding reputation, together with a number of prestigious academic bodies based at Senate House. The latter are collectively known asthe ‘School of Advanced Study’; together they serve and support both the interests ofthe Colleges and the broader achievements of UK higher education. With the central professional services they strive to enhance the academic excellence of the federal University and to deliver highly effective, value-added services to the Colleges, while at the same time ensuring the financial sustainability of all its operations. \nThe University is an exempt charitable body in England, registered in Scotland, with registration number SC005336 \nContents \n2 \n11 \n14 \n19 \n21 \n23 \n24 \n25 \n29 \n30 \n31 \n32 \n33 \n55 \nVice-Chancellor’s review \nChancellor’s engagements \nFinancial review \nCorporate governance statement \nMembership and responsibilities of the Board of Trustees Statement of internal control by the Board of Trustees \nIndependent auditors’ report to the Board of Trustees of the University of London \nStatement of the University’s principal accounting policies Consolidated income and expenditure account \nStatement of consolidated total recognised gains and losses Balance sheets \nConsolidated cash flow statement Notes to the financial statements \nAbout us \nAnnual Report and Financial Statements 2012–13 \n1 \nVice-Chancellor’s review \nThis was an exceptionally busy year in the higher education sector. The full impact of student loans, the rise of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), increased international competition and a reduction in funding levels have all altered the higher education landscape. The past two years have seen change happen at a faster pace than at any time in living memory. \nI took up my post in September 2012, and have been greatly impressed by the commitment shown by all the people who work here at Senate House. A significant number of senior staff took up their posts during the course of the year, and with their support and expertise we are very well placed to contribute with renewed vigour to the academic life of London, the UK and the international marketplace. \n2 Annual Report and Financial Statements 2012–13 \nAbove left to right \nProfessor Sir Adrian Smith, Vice-Chancellor, University of London \nJenny Abramsky, \nChair of the University of London’s Board of Trustees \nChris Cobb, \nChief Operating Officer and University Secretary \nVice-Chancellor’s review \nRight \nProfessor James Shapiro is the Larry Miller Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University \nAbove right \nProfessor Barry Smith, Director of the Institute of Philosophy \nA vote of confidence in the School of Advanced Study \nThe focus this year was on the School of Advanced Study’s (SAS) successful review by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) . In February 2013, HEFCE published its report announcing that public funding for the School will continue at the current level on the basis of a five-year rolling grant. HEFCE’s decision, in an especially competitive public funding climate for higher education, reinforces the importance of the public benefit delivered by the School as a national and, critically, a neutral research hub. \nOne of the most gratifying outcomes of the review is that SAS will no longer be subject to ‘cliff-edge’quinquennial review. Instead, the funding will roll on from year to year with a Strategic Advisory Group, which will include HEFCE membership, undertaking a light touch review of the School annually to satisfy itself that \nit is still providing public benefit. These new arrangements mean that SAS will no longer be subject to planning blight from around yea","cbCaivszCJriGUb9","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivszCJriGUb9","pdf",6324633,58,"English","# Vice-Chancellor’s review\n# Chancellor’s engagements\n# Financial review\n# Corporate governance statement\n# Membership and responsibilities of the Board of Trustees\n# Statement of internal control by the Board of Trustees\n# Independent auditors’ report to the Board of Trustees of the University of London\n# Statement of the University’s principal accounting policies\n# Consolidated income and expenditure account\n# Statement of consolidated total recognised gains and losses\n# Balance sheets\n# Consolidated cash flow statement\n# Notes to the financial statements","[{\"question\":\"What major higher education changes are discussed in the Vice-Chancellor’s review for 2012–13?\",\"answer\":\"The review highlights the impact of student loans, the rise of MOOCs, increased international competition, and reductions in funding levels that reshaped the higher education landscape.\"},{\"question\":\"What did HEFCE decide for the School of Advanced Study’s public funding in February 2013?\",\"answer\":\"HEFCE announced that public funding for the School continues at the current level using a five-year rolling grant, with annual light-touch reviews to confirm ongoing public benefit.\"},{\"question\":\"Which initiatives does the report mention for advancing the School of Advanced Study’s national mission in 2012–13?\",\"answer\":\"It mentions innovative digital resource provision (including the freely available online palaeography training platform InScribe), enhanced fellowship opportunities for visiting researchers, and an events outreach programme using platforms such as iTunes U and podcasts.\"}]","Annual Report and Financial Statements 2012-13 - University of London Central Institutes and Activities | PDF",1791018656,146]
