Appendices 118 \n5 \nIntroduction Foreword Overview 2020 at a glance \nElected Members \n6 \nLouth \nCouncil \nIntroduction \n7 \nForeword \nIt has been my privilege to serve as Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council during 2020. I took over the role of Cathaoirleach in June 2020 from Councillor Liam Reilly during a very strange time in the history of Louth and indeed the world. I would like to thank Cllr. Reilly and all my colleagues for their assistance over the past year, to pay tributes to colleagues who have left and to welcome new colleagues who joined during the year. \nIt cannot be denied that 2020 was a challenging year for all, and Louth suffered great losses as a result of Covid-19 . We will always remember and mourn loved ones and valued members of the community that we have lost. The community spirit and sense of kindness and empathy shown by the people of Louth to their friends and family in times of sadness was evident. Although we could not mourn in the traditional way, there was no doubt that we stood together in our loss. Whether this was expressed directly by phone, over social media or simply by the efforts put in by people to stick to the rules to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the people of Louth stood together to support each other. \nI would particularly like to commend the staff of Louth County Council who continued to work throughout the pandemic, many of them on the front line. Our staff ensured that essential services were provided on an ongoing and regular basis despite the obvious \nobstacles, helping the most vulnerable, organising and manning the Community Call line and sometimes just being a listening ear for those who needed it. \nIt would also be remiss of me not to mention the particular challenges Covid-19 brought to the role of the Elected Members of Louth County Council. Changing location to St. Gerard’s Hall to enable social distancing in meetings and the onset of hybrid meetings at end of year with some councillors remote meant that I as Cathaoirleach, and the other councillors, suddenly got very technical very quickly. I would like to thank my fellow councillors for all their assistance over my term as Cathaoirleach and for their ongoing dedication to the people of Louth. \nI welcome this Annual Report, which will clearly highlight the vast work that has been carried out by Louth County Council during 2020. I would like to thank our Chief Executive Joan Martin, the executive team, and all of the staff of Louth County Council for their work and commitment to the people of Louth. \nMy time as Cathaoirleach has been challenging but rewarding and I look forward to continuing to play my part in working for the county into the future. It has been an honour to serve the citizens of Louth as \nCathaoirleach of Louth County Council. \n8 \nLouth County Council | Annual Report 2020 Introduction \n9 \nOverview \nJoan Martin \nChief Executive \nThe year 2020 proved to be an extraordinary one for Louth County Council. The period was full of challenges, not least of which was maintaining services during a pandemic. I am immensely proud of how the staff of Louth County Council met each challenge thrown at them, setting aside their personal familial concerns to tackle their roles with professionalism, vigour, and innovation – often putting forward novel solutions to the challenges we faced. \nLouth County Council’s mission statement is “to provide leadership and deliver high-quality citizenfocused, responsive and effective services”. I would certainly like to think that we delivered on this challenge during 2020.
