Report 1969 \nTHE COUNCIL OF CHRISTIANS AND JEWS41 Cadogan Gardens,London,S.W.3 \nTODE \n比P \n# Chairman's Introduction\n\nIT IS ALWAYS DESTRABLE,and at times essential,to be up to date.Neverthelesswe know only too well the undesirable effects of trying too self-consciouslyto be“with it”.The report that follows indicates the ways in which the Councilof Christians and Jews has sought during 1969 to keep abreast of the constantlychanging circumstances of this rapidly moving space age.I hope that I canassure readers that the Council's officers and National Executive Committee,as well as the many local branches, which we are seeking to integrate morethan ever into our organisation, have not been victims of panic. We have, however, begun to take a searching look at ourselves and our work with thedesire to present to our members and to the general public an up to datestatement of our aims and objectives and the manner in which we hope toachieve these in the 1970s.I commend these pages to your careful andsympathetic consideration. \nThe departure from the Headquarters staff of Albert Polack was an eventto which reference is made later. It is good to be able to say that we still benefitfrom his presence at the National Executive Committee in the category of an“elder statesman”.Regretfully,we are also losing by early retirement JamesSexton,to whose organising ability we have owed so much. This gives methe opportunity to express on my behalf and yours the deep debt of gratitudewe owe to all our most hard-working staff. \nC.WITTON-DAVIES important contributions inU the field of understanding between Christians and Jews, not least inthree decades after the start of the world war which brought the Council intobeing. Then,we were formed to “combat all forms of religious and racialintolerance”—a need brought sharply into focus by what was happening inHitler Europe. From that basic manifesto,we proceeded to the more con-structive aspect of our work, that of promoting “mutual understanding andgoodwill between Christians and Jews”,with,as its corollary, the aim offostering “co-operation in educational activities and in social and communityservice”. \nThis,thirty years ago, became our programme. This, today,in lookingtowards the next thirty years, still remains our programme—because the needsare still with us,unfulfiled as yet although immense strides have been made. The words “up to date”have, therefore,a special connotation. The fact thatthe fundamental principles upon which an organisation is based, and thepurposes it exists to foster, remain constant,in no way absolves those respon-sible for its programme from seeing to it that the methods employed in the \nHeadquarters:receptions for Dr.Hannah Vogt, education adviser to
