MINUTES AFTER they had comeinto their regular monthly meeting, that all the membersof the Editorial Board, independently, had decided theywould vote for The Way West as the next Book-of-the-Month.There were a number of other excellent books,of course, but none about which there was such com-plete unanimity...The number of books that wentthrough the Club's reading procedure during the monthwas 159....The price to members for The WayWest,$3.25,calls for a note—about the continuedsavings to members on our selections. They add up,imperceptibly. The other day our Statistical Depart-ment dug up this item of information, importantenough to be passed on to members. The price to you fo1the last twelve Club selections averaged 28%less than if youhad bought the books as a non-member.This,of course,is on top of the very much larger savings represented bysuch Book-Dividends as The American Guide and thecoming Reader's Encyclopedia. The retail prices of thelast six Book-Dividends total $30.00. \nTHE October SELECTION \nOUT OF THE great westward trek that settled our PacificNorthwest comes this remarkable novel of the coveredwagon and Oregon-fevered pioneers. It is by the authorof the highly-praised The Big Sky.The narrative brings alive thestruggles of ordinary people, and their greatness,as they followedthe wagon trails in that unforgettable chapter of American history.Clifton Fadiman writes within:\"Your Selecting Committee be-lieves that Mr.Guthrie’s TheWay West will quietly establish itselfas the finest novel on the subject in existence ...It will be readwith fascination madetheir way to the bright Oregon horizon is setdown simply and humanly in The Way West \nA REVIEW BYCLIFTON FADIM AN \nCXACTIY one hundred yearsL ago Francis Henry Parkmanmade his countrymen a gift of hisclassic Oregon Trail.Since then themarvelous story of the great west-ward trek that settled the PacificNorthwest has warmed the im-aginations of dozens of Americanwriters.Your Selecting Committeebelieves that Mr.Guthrie's TheWay West will quietly establishitself as the finest novel on thesubject in existencc. It has in it \nmade its way in 1845 from Independcnce,Missouri,to the banks of the ColumbiaRiver. This is the earthy way,one feels, they must have talked and quarrelled, thiswas the manner of their birthing anddying. Thus the Indians must have acted, and the buffalo stampcded. This is how thesalt springs must have tasted and thc ter-rible Snake River becn forded.Just thisway they must have gathered buffalo chipsto feed their fires. This is the way thewomen,dry-skinned,weather-beaten,musthave rocked painfully on the high perchcs \nthe kind of honesty and dignity,a purerespect for the facts, that will almost surelyendow it with a life beyond a mere season'spopularity. It will also establish Mr.Guthrie(whose The Big Sky will be remem-bered with pleasure)unassailably as oneof the best of our historical novelists. \nMr.Guthrie's scholarship, almost com-pletely concealed, must be immense, for noeasy impressionism could give the readerwhat he gives:a sense that exactly thus, and in no other way,a middle-sized trainof Oregon-fevered Americans must have \nof their covered wagons, cravingonly one thing:\"to setin a chair.\"The center of Mr.Guthrie'snarrative is the rock-like figureof Lije Evans, strong, and slow, and calm in his spirit.\"It wouldbe a good thing to a man,\"thinksLije,\"knowin'he had helped \nsettle the country and so joined it toAmerica.\"His wife,Rebecca,is the propermate for him, durable, uncomplaining.quite unconscious of the fact that she, likemost of the other womcn on the journeyis a heroine.
