She was four when she left her native Germany, thirteen when she went into hiding, and not yet sixteen when she died in a concentration camp, one of the six million Jewish victims of Hitler ’s racial madness. \nOver the past sixty years, Anne Frank has become a universal symbol of the oppressed in a world of violence and tyranny. Her name invokes humanity, tolerance, human rights, and democracy; her image is the epitome of optimism and the will to live. Millions of young people in search of their own identity regard her as their spokesperson, indeed, as their heroine. She is seen as “Hitler ’s most famous victim.” Her diary has been interpreted as an eternal testament of courage and hope, relevant to all, and often, though only secondarily, as a document of the Holocaust. Some of the things she wrote have acquired near proverbial status, and—frequently taken out of context—they have been used as slogans for any number of points of view. If there were Jewish saints, someone would probably have long since proposed her beatification. \nI was thirteen when I read the diary for the first time. I identified with Anne ’s struggle for selfrealization, a struggle most adolescents wage, but she entered hers armed with unusual clarity about her goals and an acute awareness of her gifts. In so many of the things she wrote, she spoke for me. The resentment she felt toward her mother was something I felt, too. And I was deeply affected by the knowledge that the diary had been written by a victim of persecution, by a girl hunted in a reign of terror, who had died about eight months after writing her last diary entry. My youthful, naïve“Why?”—why did this happen?—met only with excuses or, more often, with silence. \nIn my midtwenties, I read Anne ’s diary again, this time in the so-called definitive edition, which contains several entries, some of them very personal, omitted from the original version of the diary edited by Otto Frank. When I finished, I was beset by more questions than I had started with: I wondered what Anne ’s relatives on either side of her family experienced during this period when the moral principles of millions of people dissolved and concern for others became an alien concept. What was the environment in which she began to mature? Who were her friends? What were the turning points in her childhood? Her diary, after all, deals with just one-seventh of her life. Once again I was left with no satisfactory answers. \nAnd so my search began—initially in the 1990s—a search for the person behind the legend, a search for the incidents and events that shaped the life and personality of Annelies Marie Frank. I wanted to explore the family background and the social milieu in which her life was rooted. Hers was a strong character, but it was still impressionable, still developing. This biography, therefore, is not an attempt to probe the psychology and define the contours of a life lived to completion. It is instead an effort to follow Anne attentively on a personal and intellectual journey that was broken off abruptly and prematurely. My goal was to gather as many fragments of the mosaic as possible and create as authentic a picture of Anne ’s brief life as I could, illuminating the familial and social circumstances that provided the foundation of her life and left their mark on it. \nIn its honesty and clarity, Anne ’s diary ","cbCaiaKfHOi8F3Fy","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaKfHOi8F3Fy","pdf",4456142,255,"English","# Contents\n## Foreword to the New Edition\n## Family Tree\n## 1.
