He tried to brush away one of the dark spatters of mud from his Prussian Foot Guards uniform. He merely spread it wider.  \n“Look again,” said his towering, forbidding superior.  \nFaber obediently observed the body. The blood from the torn wounds had ceased to flow in the warm spring air. The man had been dead half an hour, and they were still waiting on the stretcher party. Just his luck that the Intelligence Officer turned up and suddenly found it so interesting. He didn’t even know the dead man. He was just a runner, carrying messages up and down the line. There were dozens of them. This one had simply been in the wrong place when the French threw a mortar round over to keep them on edge.  \n“He’s wearing the wrong boots?” suggested Faber finally. He wanted a cigarette, felt the craving in his fingertips and clawing at the back of his eyes, but von Trelow reputedly didn’t smoke, barely drank, and didn’t visit the regimental brothels. Apparently, he had a wife, but so did lots of men, it didn’t stop them. The man wasn’t normal.
