The text explains how cassowaries survive in deep forests, what they eat as omnivores, and their strong running and swimming abilities. It also covers cassowary defense using their middle-toe claw and highlights parental roles, including incubation and chick care. The book further describes the southern cassowary and the Raggiana bird of paradise, detailing diet, habitat, breeding season timing, courtship behavior, and nesting.","4f Animals in Papua New Guinea \nWritten by Petra den Hartogh Layout and Design by Petra den Hartogh Photos by various \nBloom book layout by SIL-PNG Education for Life \nThis book is also available as a 'Talking Book'You can read and listen to it on your phone/tablet. They are shy and live deep in the forest. What does a cassowary eat? It mostly eats fruits, but it can also eat mushrooms, insects and small animals like rats. We call this kind of animal an omnivore. \nCassowaries are very good swimmers, jumpersand runners. From a stand-still they can jump \n1.5 metres high. They can run quickly, up to 50 kilometres per hour. \nThe cassowary is a dangerous bird. It will use the claw of its middle toe like a dagger to defend itself. The cassowary can easily kill a person. \n2 \nThe male cassowary is a caring father. He incubates the eggs for 50 days. Once the eggs hatch, he will take care of the chicks for another 9 months. \nAn animal that eats both meat and plants \nTo keep warm until time to hatch \n3 \nSouthern cassowary \n4 \nGolden neck cassowary \nDwarf cassowary \n6 \nThe male Raggiana bird of paradise is famous for its \nbeautiful tail feathers. These feathers grow up to 35 centimetres long. \nThe Raggiana bird of paradise is an omnivore. It eats fruits and berries, as well as insects, frogs and small reptiles. \nIt lives in the forests of Papua New Guinea. \nThe breeding season is long. It starts in April and ends in December. Many males come together at one place in the forest. There they dance on a branch. The males show off their beautiful feathers. The female comes to watch them dance. She chooses the best dancer to mate with. \nAfter mating, the male does not help with raising the chicks. \nThe female makes a cup-shaped nest. She uses leaves, twigs, ferns and moss. The female will then lay 1 or 2 pink-coloured eggs. She incubates the eggs for 18 days. \nThe time of year when animals mate \nThe time when male and female animals come together to make babies \n7 \nmale \nfemal \ne","cbCaitwhigeAiVOf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitwhigeAiVOf","pdf",3710328,3,1,34,"English","en",105,"# Cassowaries in Papua New Guinea\n## Diet and omnivore traits\n## Movement and speed\n## Defense and danger\n## Male parenting and incubation\n# Raggiana Bird of Paradise\n## Diet and habitat\n## Breeding season and courtship\n## Nesting and eggs","[{\"question\":\"What do cassowaries usually eat?\",\"answer\":\"Cassowaries mostly eat fruits, but they also eat mushrooms, insects, and small animals like rats.
