choirmasters con-cerning matters which often confuse and trouble them when goingfrom one Episcopal Church position to another or when securinga post as choirmaster in an Episcopal Church for the first time. \nWhether it should be so or not,the fact remains that thereare various“Anglican Ways”of conducting Services which requirevarious types of music, and a wellprepared choirmaster must under-stand them. The author has no wish nor intention to recommendone“way”as being better than another, but has tried to explainthem all so far as he is able. The terms\"High Church”and“LowChurch\"are used because the general public uses them constantlyand all English dictionaries define them. \nIt is hoped that the chapters on Plainsong and the other con-tents of the book may prove helpful to many. \n# Preface\n\nThis manual includes rewritten and revised chapters from apreviously published booklet entitled“A Choirmaster's Notebook”together with much new material relating to Anglican liturgicalmusic and kindred subjects. \nNo musical examples are given in the text but references aremade to passages in the Kyrial of Winfred Douglas and the ChoralService of the Joint Commission, which should be in the personallibrary of every choirmaster interested in liturgical music.Boththese books are published by the H.W.Gray Co.,Inc.,New York. \nIntroduction \nA Liturgy is an authorized form of Public Worship.TheLiturgy of 'the Anglican(Episcopal)Church is contained in theBook of Common Prayer. It includes 'the Service of Holy Com-munion(often called the Mass or the Eucharist),Morning andEvening Prayer,The Litany, the Penitential Office, the Rites ofBaptism,Confirmation,Matrimony, the Burial of the Dead, andthe Form and Manner of Making,Ordaining and ConsecratingBishops,Priests and Deacons. Many of these Rites consist largelyof adaptations and translations from the Latin Missal, and otherpre-Reformation liturgical books. \nLiturgical music is that composed specifically for the Liturgy. Its sole purpose is to emphasize the meaning and to enhance thebeauty of the words. Its object is not merely to please the listenerbut to lead the thoughts of the worshipper toward God.Thefollowing quotations from writers who lived many centuries apartmake it clear as to what should be the character of the music inour churches. The first, from an essay of Robert Bridges (nine-teenth century): \n“...If we consider and ask ourselves what sort ofmusic we should wish to hear on entering a church, weshould surely,in describing our ideal, say, first of all thatit must be something different from what is heard else-where;that it should be a sacred music, devoted to itspurpose;a music whose peace should still passion, whosedignity should strengthen our faith, whose beauty shouldfind a home in our hearts to cheer us in life and death;amusic worthy of the fair temples in which we meet, and ofthe holy words of
