OF ANT S. \nNSIGNIFICANT as the ant may seem, there is noother insect, the honey-bee excepted, whose characterand economy have excited so much intelligent curio-sity and research.Nor does this arise fron anybenefit which it confers,or ravage which it commits;for, generally speaking, its effects are unimportant in eitherrespect. It is the ceaseless activity of the little creature, itsindustry, its care for its young, and, above all,its socialeconomy, which have so long attracted human attention, andmade one of the tiniest insects the permanent emblem of someof the highest virtues. The sluggard has been sent to the antto consider her ways, the prodigal to imitate her thrift;theyoung are told that she gathereth her meat in summer, and theunruly and turbulent have a powerful monitor in the harmonyof her busy communities. It is to the more remarlkable of thesetraits that we intend at present to direct attention. \n# GENERAL CHARACTER AND ECONOMY.\n\nThe form of the ant,or emmet, must be so familiar to every one, that anything like a description seems quite unnecessary.Ento-mologists arrange it under the order Hymenoptera;that is, \nIn systems of natnral history, ants form the seventh family of Hyme-nopterous inseets, under the title Fornieide, from the Latin wordfornicn,an ant.The genera and species are not well defined,in consequence ofthe little attention which lias as yet bcen paid to this departmei:t of ani-mated nature. \nNo.88. \n# ANECDOTES OF ANTS.\n\ninsects having four membranous wings,in which the nervuresare small and scarcely eonspicuous. This may startle those whoare accustomed to consider ants as wingless creatures that burrowin little hillocks and under stones;but the discrepancy willdisappear when it is stated that, like some other social insects, ants are of three sexes—males, females, and neuters—and thatit is only the perfect sexes which are furnished with wings. The males and females form but a very small portion of estab-lished communities, and abound only for a short while before theswarming season in summer. At that time they go forth intothe air,for the purposes of reproduction—the males dyingin a few days, and the females falling to the ground, wherethey either return to the original nest,or are surrounded bystray neuters, and become the foundresses of new communities. They then throw off their wings as useless appendages, andbecome queens and mothers,in which state they never leave thenest, but are tended and fed by the neuters or workers. It is forthis reason that the population of an ant-hill is so generallywingless,it being the neuters which form more than nine-tenthsof the number, and on whom the labours and economy of thecommunity entirely depend. They not only construct the nest, but most carefully tend the young grubs;supplying them with \nfood,moving them on finedays to the outer surface ofthe nest,to give them heat, carrying them back againon the approach of night orbad weather, and defendingthem when attacked by ene-mies.The sexes are of diffe-rent sizes, the females beinglargest, the neuters next, andthen the males, which are \n# A2卷\n\n1.Female;2.Male;3.Worker. \nsometimes of very tiny proportions. Some of the neuters havelonger bodies and larger heads than the others;and,as will beafterwards seen, these have peculiar functions assigned them inthe labours of the community. Most of the species are stingless, but all of them bite fiercely with their mandibles, and have theproperty of ejecting a very acrid secretion, which inflames andirritates the skin like the sting of a nettle. \nThere are many species of ants, distinguished by their sizeand colour, but chiefly by their habits—some burrowing inthe ground, others piling up little mounds or hillocks;somehewing out their cells and passages in decayed timber, othersconstructing a nest of great neatness among the boughs andbranches of the trees on which they feed. They are omnivorousin their habits—devouring almost any kind of vegetable oranimal substance that lies within their reach;but are particu","cbCaihR5k7DwCJpO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihR5k7DwCJpO","pdf",2983182,32,"English","# GENERAL CHARACTER AND ECONOMY.\n##
