It evaluates Milhaud and Martinů string trios, highlighting contrasting tonalities from playful serenades to austere counterpoint, and notes how later works gain reward through distinctive themes and textures. Additional sections assess Mozart violin concertos for crisp phrasing, shaped cantilena, and lively finales, alongside an appraisal of Terry Riley’s minimalism-adjacent disc focused on electric-guitar patterns, restrained elegance, and rhythmic clarity.","slightly from the otherwise vivid andreverberant recording. \nROBIN STOWELL \nMILHAUD String Trio op.274,Sonatine à trois op.221bMARTINŮ String Trios nos.1&2Jacques Thibaud String Trio \nAUDITE 97.727 \nA fascinating if unequal pairing, but beguilingly performed \nThe complere’trios of Milhaud andMartinů make a neat combinationbeyond the fact that both names beginwith an ‘M':each knew the other, spenttime in Paris during itinerant lives, and wrote a pair of works in the form. But the astute booklet note lets the catout of the bag,in Milhaud's case, withthe phrase occasional finger exercises-that is exactly what the Frenchcomposer's trios sound like.Op.74is a strange mix of the fleetingly fun(the central Serenade)and the austere(nearly everything else). The purecounterpoint of op.221b-written asthe composer wandered through theUS in exile-can feel rootless, chasingits own tail. \nMartinůs comparatively immatureworks-the first written as he wanderedthe banks ofthe Seine,homeless-aremore rewarding and gregarious.Whenhe insists on delving into densecounterpoint,Martinů aids the earswith distinctive themes.Already inthe String Trio no.1 we can hear hisimagination at work, unusual texturesand rhythms abutting one another. \nBoth this work and its successoroffer wonderful apotheoses that areaware of their own sense of effect. So too is the Jacques Thibaud Trio, which raises its expressive game butis sometimes tested by the mercilesstextures.Who wouldn't be?Therecording, from the Jesus-Christus-Kirke in Berlin,is clean. \n# ANDREW MELLOR\n\nMOZART Violin concertos:no.1 inB flat major K207,no.2 in Dmajor K211,no.3 in G major K216,no.4 in DmajorK218,no.5 in Amajor K219;Adagioin Hungarian-British team \nThis is a well-established team:ZsoltKalló has been concertmaster ofCapella Savaria, the first period-instrument ensemble in Hungary, since 1999 and Nicholas McGeganhas been working with them for 30years.It shows in their easy rapportand precision of ensemble.Stringintonation in the band is not pristine, but there are a lot of good things here.Kallós playing is superb, his soundclean and focused, tempered byjudicious use of vibrato. \nIn the First Concerto there is crisp, energetic playing from everyone. In thefirst movement of the Second Concertothe phrasing is subtle and stylish;thelong cantilenas of the second-movement Andante are beautifullyshaped, and the finale Rondeau skipsalong. The interplay of legato andstaccato in the opening Allegro of theThird Concerto is delightful, rhythmically sprung and witty, and inthe Adagio Kalló's expressive use ofvibrato gives shape and momentumto the melodies. \nIn che opening Allegro of the FourthConcerto a jaunty swagger offsets themartial rhythms of the opening subject. The second movement moves alongas a good Andante should, with Kallóproducing moments of great warmth inthe lower register, and the finale brimswith wit and fun. There is urgency inthe first movement of the FifthConcerto, with beautifully articulatedplaying, and in the second movement \nKalló gives a masterly demonstration ofseamless cantabile. The playing in thefinale is rich and vivid. The three single-movement works receive sprightly, elegant performances.Recorded soundis clean and dry. \nTIMHOMFRAY \nRILEY Dark Queen Mantra; The Wheeland
