From about 3000 BC the country was ruled by a single king, or pharaoh. Egypt is a land of mostly desert but the River Nile, which flows through it provides water for crops, animals and people.  \nThe Nile .  \nThe River Nile was normally about 1km wide but during the yearly floods it became up to 16kms wide. When the water receded it left thick, black fertile soil to grow good crops of wheat, barley and flax. The Egyptians built special irrigation channels to take the river water as far into the fertile land as possible. The river was also the main means of transportation.  \nFood .  \nThe main food eaten by the Ancient Egyptians was bread. The poor people ate fish with their bread. The rich people also ate meat from cow, pig, sheep, duck and goose. Farmers grew fruit and vegetables; dates, figs, grapes, raisins, pomegranates, onions, beans, garlic, leeks, lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers and lentils.  \nHouse .  \nAll of the houses, even the Pharaoh’s palace, were made of mud brick with a flat roof. They did not have much furniture inside the house. The rich people often had a garden with a pool.  \nClothes .  \nThe women wore long white linen dresses. Men wore short pleated skirts. Both men and women wore black or green eye makeup, necklaces, and wigs of black hair or sheep’s wool. Sandals were made from papyrus.  \nPapyrus .  \nPapyrus reeds grow in the swamps by the River Nile.
