C. Furnas’s book, positioning it as a vivid and carefully documented examination of myths about the American Negro, from origins to prevailing misconceptions. The review argues that stereotypes trace largely to Uncle Tom’s Cabin, showing how the “Tom show” entered national consciousness. It contrasts melodramatic images of slavery with the institution’s daily cruelty, lifelong brutalization, and economic hopelessness. The critique also highlights discussions of miscegenation and emphasizes Furnas’s open-minded method that keeps contested questions a good deal clearer” \n## REPORT BY BASIL DAVENPORT\n\nHIS BOOK is at once the most enlightening, most fair-minded,mostreadable—and even most entertaining—that has yet appeared onthe relations between whites and Negroes in the United States.“Entertaining”may seem a strange word to use for a book on asubject so tragic in its roots and so menacing in its potentialities, but nothing else will do for the picture Mr.Furnas presents of that trulydeplorable do-gooder,Harriet Beecher Stowe.Mrs.Stowe's qualificationsas an expert on conditions in the South were an unquestioned zeal, amelodramatic imagination, and one visit of a few days'duration to friendsin Kentucky. This last she was accustomed to refer to in such phrases as\"During my sojourn in the South\"and“As any traveler familiar with theSouth can testify”—plainly implying an acquaintance with the South thatwas both wide and deep. She also declared that God was the actual authorof Uncle Tom's Cabin. One is reminded of Disraeli's remark that he wouldn'tmind Gladstone always producing an ace from his sleeve if he wouldn'tmaintain that God had put it there. \nMr.Furnas makes an excellent case for the proposition that all the worststereotypes in our conception of the Negro come from Uncle Tom's Cabin.Through the medium of the \"Tom show,\"the book has seeped into ournational consciousness.I myself have never read it,but if you gave it to \nme in a free-association test,I should be able to answer:“Eliza crossing theice to free soil, carrying her baby and pursued by bloodhounds;pious UncleTom declaring,'My body belong to Marse Legree, but my soul belong toGod,'and being flogged to death;Little Eva dying to slow music;and alittle Negro girl named Topsy, who ‘just growed.'”I imagine that mostpeople could do as well as that;and if,unlike me,you have actually readUncle Tom's Cabin, you might also remember that Little Eva's father, the \naristocratic planter St.Clare, lived in amansion that would have done credit tothe Count of Monte Cristo, and UncleTom lived in a glass-windowed cabin sur-rounded with flowers;and that Eliza hadbeen separated from her husband, wholike herself was nearly white.Mrs.Stowespecifically says that light-skinned slaveswere the ones who revolt and escape, sincetheir \"proud Anglo-Saxon blood\"wouldnot bear slavery. \nThat is,the impression we have allderived, more or less, from Uncle Tom'sCabin is that the tragedy of slavery, and ofracism,is a melodramatic business ofbroken families and floggings to death, which are now done away with, thank \n“The Auction Sale”—an illustration from the original editionof UNCLE TOM’s CABIN.Admittedly one of the worst features ofslavery, the public auction of Negroes provided antislaverypropagandists like Harriet Beecher Stowe with many a melo-dramatic and heart-rending scene.Even Southerners wereshamed by these public sales. As one Southern woman said:“Ifyou can stand that,no other Southern thing need choke you.” \nGod,so we needn't worry;that run-of-the-mill slavery is hard only onthose with a high percentage of Anglo-Saxon blood;that full-bloodedNegroes like Tom and Topsy were either unbearably pious or else black-face comedians, and in either case happy enough until the Old Plantationhad to be sold;and that life on the Old Plantation was both luxuriousand chivalrous, something like the loftier scenes in Walter Scott. \nMr.Furnas scrutinizes and demolishes these beliefs,in a manner that isno ","cbCaigTkSJnZtfqc","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigTkSJnZtfqc","pdf",2247804,24,"English","# REPORT BY BASIL DAVENPORT\n##
