It breaks down essay questions into four key components: Orientation, Topic, Focus, and Task. The guide emphasizes the importance of carefully reading the question, identifying topic words that define the subject, task words that specify the required action (e.g., evaluate, discuss, critique), and focus words that narrow the scope of the essay. An example is presented to illustrate the step-by-step process of unpacking an essay question, using color-coding to highlight different components. The document concludes by reiterating the four-step analysis process and advises students to seek further assistance from Language and Learning Advisors.",{"@graph":69,"@context":123},[70,84,106],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":20,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/exam/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/analysing-essay-questions/269823/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/analysing-essay-questions/269823.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Emma Wilson","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-28","2026-09-15",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":105},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",12,{"@type":107,"mainEntity":108},"FAQPage",[109,115,119],{"name":110,"@type":111,"acceptedAnswer":112},"What are the four main parts of an essay question?","Question",{"text":113,"@type":114},"An essay question typically consists of an Orientation (context), a Topic (subject), a Focus (specific element of the subject), and a Task (what you need to do).","Answer",{"name":116,"@type":111,"acceptedAnswer":117},"What is the purpose of 'topic words' in an essay question?",{"text":118,"@type":114},"Topic words identify the main subject of the essay, ensuring you understand the core content to be addressed.",{"name":120,"@type":111,"acceptedAnswer":121},"How do 'focus words' help in writing an essay?",{"text":122,"@type":114},"Focus words limit the scope of your essay, guiding you to concentrate on specific aspects of the topic, such as particular demographics or geographical areas, rather than covering the subject too broadly.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":83,"og:type":125,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":95,"og:description":67},"article",{"robots":127,"canonical":83},"index,follow",{"doc_id":129,"site_id":62},269823,1791353753,{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":132},{"doc_id":129,"user_id":133,"nickname":92,"user_avatar":134,"doc_module":4,"category_id":19,"category_name":20,"doc_title":65,"doc_description":67,"doc_content":135,"file_id":136,"file_url":137,"file_type":138,"file_size":139,"view_count":105,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":8,"is_downloadable":8,"audit_status":8,"page_count":8,"language":140,"language_code":63,"site_id":62,"html_lang":63,"table_of_contents":141,"faqs":142,"seo_title":143,"seo_description":67,"update_tm":144,"read_time":81},3848291630094,"https://eur-avatar.wpscdn.com/davatar_085a072bc5b1113ac321206ff7593b45","Study Skills: Unpacking essay questions \nVideo transcript \nIn this video, we'll discuss how to analyse essay questions. \nAn essay question usually contains: \n1. The Orientation: This is general information about the topic which sets the context. \n2. The Topic: This is the subject of your essay. \n3. the Focus: This identifies the specific element of the topic, often limiting what you will write about. \n4. The Task: This tells you what to do. For example, you could argue for or against something, discuss something, critique something and so on. \nHere's an example of how to unpack an essay question. \nThe first step is to read the question carefully to familiarise yourself with the general subject you will write about. \nNext, we find topic words that identify the subject of the essay. In blue, we have the phrases fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, cognitive impairment, role, government, addressing this issue, and communities. So, now we know what the subject of our essay is. \nThen, we find task words that tell us what to do. In this case, we have the word evaluate, in green. Evaluate means to assess or judge one or more aspects of something. So, in this essay, we'll evaluate how well the government tackles fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. \nFinally, we identify focus words that limit the scope of your essay. In this essay, we want to focus on the cognitive impairments found in children, not adults. Similarly, we want to focus on the role the national government plays, not local or state governments. Lastly, we want to focus on remote communities, rather than urban communities. \nSo, to recap. You need to analyse your essay questions by following these four steps: Read the question carefully, identify topic words, identify task words and identify focus words. \nAnd this is how you unpack an essay question. For further help, speak to a Language and Learning Advisor and ask for advice.","cbCaiqnovFBFeEmw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqnovFBFeEmw","pdf",187623,"English","# Analysing Essay Questions\n## Key Components of an Essay Question\n## Steps to Unpack an Essay Question","[{\"question\":\"What are the four main parts of an essay question?\",\"answer\":\"An essay question typically consists of an Orientation (context), a Topic (subject), a Focus (specific element of the subject), and a Task (what you need to do).\"},{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of 'topic words' in an essay question?\",\"answer\":\"Topic words identify the main subject of the essay, ensuring you understand the core content to be addressed.\"},{\"question\":\"How do 'focus words' help in writing an essay?\",\"answer\":\"Focus words limit the scope of your essay, guiding you to concentrate on specific aspects of the topic, such as particular demographics or geographical areas, rather than covering the subject too broadly.\"}]","Analysing Essay Questions | PDF",1789453971]
