We understand that these may not be the same words you use for your body or the words that best describe you. We use the term “STI” for sexually transmitted infection. \nYou decide if you want to have anal sex. Checking in with your partner to make sure you are both on board with what is happening before, during, and after sex is an important part of having great sex! \nIT’S UP TO YOU. \nCAN YOU GET STIs FROM ANAL SEX? YES. \nThere are lots of ways to have sex! It’s important to know that some ways, like anal sex without a condom, can make you more likely to get an STI or HIV. The skin of the anus is very thin and does not make its own lubrication. This can make small tears more likely during anal sex, which makes it easier for STIs to spread. Here are some ways to prevent STIs and stay healthy! \nFOR TOPS \nUse a lubricated external condom on your penis during anal sex to best protect you and your partner from STIs. \nUse LOTS of lube! Lube is great for pleasure and reducing friction. There is no such thing as too much! Use a silicone-or water-based lube, because oil-based lubes will weaken condoms. If you are inserting fingers or hands into the anus, gloves are the best option for protecting yourself and your partners from STIs and other illnesses. You can use lube on gloves too! \nFOR EVERYONE \nFOR BOTTOMS \nHave your partner wear a lubricated external condom on their penis during anal sex to best protect you and your partner from STIs. Use LOTS of lube! Lube helps protect your anus from small skin tears that can happen during anal sex. These tears make it more likely for you to get an STI from a partner. \nMake sure you use a silicone-or water-based lube with a condom. \nIf your partner doesn’t wear a condom, you can use an internal condom (sometimes called a female condom) . Take out the inner ring before using to make it more comfortable and likely to stay in. Don’t insert the condom past the external ring. \nIf you don’t use a condom, ask a healthcare provider about DoxyPEP, which can be taken after sex to prevent some STIs. PrEP is a daily pill you can take to prevent getting HIV. Talk to a health care provider about whether PrEP is right for you. \nPrEP \nAvoid using poppers. Poppers are vasod ilators, which widen blood vessels and increase blood to flow to the anus. Poppers can make you more vulnerable to infections. They can increase your risk for tears/cuts, which creates more potential exposure to sexual fluids and blood. They can also make you not think about other ways to protect yourself from STIs ( like using condoms) . \nLube \nET TE TED regularly! Visit our website for more info! \nG S \n[washtenaw.org/sexualhealth](washtenaw.org/sexualhealth) \nIt’s important to get tested in all of the places on your body that you are using to have sex. Talk to the health care provider doing your test about the types of sex you are having so you can get all the tests you need to keep yourself and your partner(s) safe! \nThis fact sheet is for information only and is not meant to be used for self-diagnosis or as a substitute for consultation with a health care provider. \nAdapted from materials originally created by University of Michigan Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities.","cbCainLA9BySypvl","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainLA9BySypvl","pdf",239612,"English","# Can You Get STIs From Anal Sex?\n## Prevention for Tops\n## Prevention for Everyone / Bottoms\n## If You Don’t Use a Condom\n## Avoiding Poppers and Getting Tested","[{\"question\":\"Why does anal sex without a condom increase STI or HIV risk?\",\"answer\":\"The anus skin is very thin and does not make its own lubrication, which can lead to small tears during anal sex.
