The book emphasizes explaining facts through the interplay of personal contributions and broader, period-by-period movements. It also records how forces transform literary standards and tastes over time. \nG.BELL AND SONS,LTD. \nPR85H83 \n# PREFACE\n\nTHE purpose and plan of this little book may easily be gatheredfrom the introductory chapter.Only a few words of preface, therefore, are needed. \nAs I conceive it,a history of English literature, howeverbrief, should still be a history of English literature in fact aswell as in name;and for a history something more is requiredthan a list of authors and their books, and even than a chrono-logically-arranged collection of biographical sketches andcritical appreciations. It is true that a nation's literature ismade up of the works of individual writers, and that for theordinary purposes of study these writers may be detached fromtheir surroundings and treated separately. But we cannotget a history of such literature unless and until each one hasbeen put into his place in the sequence of things and consideredwith reference to that great body of literary production ofwhich his work must now be regarded as a part.A history ofEnglish literature, then, must be interested primarily inEnglish literature as a whole. Its chief aim should be to givea clear and systematic account, not of the achievements ofsuccessive great writers merely,as such, but of national changesand development. \nThis does not imply neglect of the personal factor. On thecontrary,it brings the personal factor into relief;for if eachwriter is to be considered with reference to literature as a whole, one main subject of enquiry must be the nature and value ofhis particular contribution to that whole. But it does mean \nPREFACE \nthat,together with the personal factor, the great general move-ment of literature from age to age has to be investigated, andthat every writer has to be interpreted in his connection withthis general movement. To exhibit the interplay of the per-sonal and the impersonal in the making of history is,indeed, one of the fundamentals of the historian's task;andsince history, properly understood,is as much concerned withthe explanation of facts as with the facts themselves, itfollows that a history of English literature must also includesome record of the forces which, period by period, have com-bined in the transformation of literary standards and tastes. \nI have put these ideas into different, and perhaps rathersimpler language in my introductory chapter. Here, therefore,I have only to say that this Outline History represents a modestattempt towards a real history of English literature in thesense which I attach to the term. One special feature of thebook may be noted. It appears to be an accepted principlewith many critics that literature is produced,as it were,in avacuum, and by men who stand outside all conditions of timeand place, and that
