English dictionary, based on the foremost recentauthorities, and embodying a copious selection of modern words, aswell as important obsolete ones, presented in a practical and yetetymological form. \nThe main features of the work are explained below. \n# I.THE ITALIAN-ENGLISH PART\n\nThe chief authority followed has been Petrocchi’s Novodizionario scolastico. But at its side have been consulted especiallyPetrocchi's Dizionario universale della lingua italiana,Rigutini-Fanfani's Vocabolario italiano,Zambaldi's Vocabolario etimo-logico italiano, and Baretti's,Millhouse's,and James-Grassi's well-known dictionaries. \nThe vocabulary embodies a considerably larger number ofItalian words than ordinary dictionaries of a similar size, and manymore than Rigutini-Fanfani's large Italian dictionary.Almostevery modern word contained in Petrocchi's‘scholastic’dictionaryis quoted, and also a large number of rare or obsolete words, especially such as are indispensable in reading.Italian classics. These are mainly from Petrocchi's‘lingua fuori d'uso, and aremarked with a dagger(十).It should be noted here, however, thatthe obsolete abstracts in -tate,-tade,and -tute,-tude,as identicalwith the modern in -ta and -tù,have been consistently omitted asunnecessary repetitions. \nIrregular forms of inflection are noted with their words, andalso largely as titles in their alphabetical order. The full conjuga-tion of each simple irregular verb is given below the verb, and theconjugation of their compounds by proper reference, either directlyor by pointing out the composition. \nIdiomatic phrases are usually given only when not self-explanatory;and,on the whole, space for idioms has been econo-mized in favor of a large vocabulary. \nCopyright,I9oI, \nBY \nHENRY HOLT &CO.
