\nPublished by Paulist Press997 Macarthur BoulevardMahwah,New Jersey 07430 \nwww.paulistpress.com \nPrinted and bound in theUnited States of America \nTHIS BRIEF VOLUME is an invítation to a dialogue:with yourselfand with God.This text itselfis purposely written in one-syllable words, becauseIbelieve we can have a con-versation with ourselves, with others, and with God withoutheavy and awkward theological and psychological terms.Thethought of this volume began when I was fourteen years oldand a student ín the confirmation class at Temple Beth ElinDetroit,Michigan. It was a large class (about 120 students)and,in a particular session, the senior rabbi told us,\"God is thesum total of all your expectations magnified into perfection.\"I played with his words for a few moments and looked to myleft at my beautiful fourteen-year-old girlfriend—whom Ifelttobe the \"sum total of all my expectations magnifed to perfec-tion.\"I didn't learn anything about God that day,but the ideaof \"knowing,\"\"being in relationship with,\"and \"loving andbeing loved\"took on new meanings. \nBy age fifteen I knew I wanted to become a rabbi.Still, mymotivation was not theological.I was greatly impressed by thetwo assistant rabbis at Temple Beth El.They were caring menwith a profound influence on many of us.I wanted to becomea rabbi becauseI wanted to be a person like Rabbi David Bay-linson or Rabbi Sherwin T.Wine.On the Shabbat evenings \nwhen Rabbi Baylinson spoke, several of my classmates and Iwould attend worship services. We went to hear and supportour rabbi. \nThroughout college I pursued a broad education with amajor in psychology and minors in Near Eastern languagesand literature and creative writing.Ialso studied the literatureof Buddhism and Taoism, the richness of the Far East, and theSynoptic Gospels.I wanted to be prepared for the upcomingfive years of rabbinical school.I was open to a variety of Godconcepts.I was beginning to open to the mysteries of life.Inmy junior year,I fell totally in love with Shirley Irene Kane, and we were married on December 25,1963.We still hada semester of undergraduate education—and fve years ofrabbinical school—ahead of us.Shirley and I have been mar-ried for fifty four years, and our love for one another and ourunderstanding of the many facets of love continue to grow. \nIn rabbinical school I was introduced to countless Jewishphilosophies and theological approaches.I believed in God,but the suggested arguments for God's existence eluded me.I felt the philosophers were trying too hard and that manyof them were simply too verbose. The approach taken bymy philosophy/theology professor encouraged me to mem-orize data for an examination, but not to understand.Under-standing came through dialogue with non-Jewish clergy, selected rabbinic colleagues, and conversations with Shirley. My deepest understanding, which I share in the followingmeditation, came through a personal and mutually growthproducíng relationship
