It highlights benefits for instruction and learning, including uninterrupted teacher time, instructional flexibility, deeper topic study, and stronger problem-solving. Reported successes include improved attendance, better academic performance, fewer disciplinary referrals, higher engagement, and greater college enrollment, while noting that comprehensive effectiveness research is not yet complete.","HRW \nA D V A N C E DALGE BRABLOCK SCHEDULING HANDBOOK \nBLOCK SCHEDULING HANDBOOKexploreCo m m u n i pace.Forinstance,a course in the semestered block sched-ule may be extended so that it meets for 90 min-utes every day for an entire school year.Additionally, students can retake a course in onesemester that they failed in the previous semester. \nThe purpose of block schedules is to struc-ture the time and resources of a schoolmore effectively by creating longerperiods,or blocks,of time for each subject.Blockschedules accommodate longer class periods in avariety of ways but generally fall into two cate-gories:semestered block courses and alternating-day block courses.Schools that implement blockschedules often create modified versions of thesegeneral categories to best accommodate theirspecific needs. \n# BENEFITS OF BLOCK SCHEDULING\n\nBlock classes provide teachers with uninterruptedquality time to engage students and help themfocus on the course content more effectively.Thelonger classes provide an opportunity for greaterinstructional flexibility and innovation.Inmathematics, this means allowing students toparticipate in cooperative-learning activities, explorations and experiments, and other student-centered learning. When students are able tostudy topics in greater depth, they develop betterthinking and problem-solving skills.Students con-nect their learning with the world outside theclassroom and are encouraged to be independentlearners. \nSemestered block courses are intended to teacha full-year's curriculum intensively for only aportion of the school year. With the semesteredblock course schedule, students would take fewercourses at any given time.Teachers would teachfewer classes and, therefore, fewer students.Forexample, students might attend four 90-minuteclasses every day for half of the school year, whileteachers might teach three 90-minute classes a daywith a total of 75-90 students. This model is alsoreferred to as the accelerated,concentrated,inten-sive,4x4,straight,or four-block model. \nThese benefits of block scheduling may also stim-ulate additional benefits, such as providing apositive effect on the school's social climate, reducing disciplinary problems, and motivatingstudents.Block schedules may reduce many long-standing student problems such as high absen-teeism,high failure rates, high drop-out rates, disciplinary infractions, attitude problems,highstudent-teacher classroom ratios, reduced student-teacher interactions, and inadequate time andresources given to learning-disabled students. \nAlternating-day block courses meet every otherday for approximately 90 minutes for the entireschool year. With the alternating-day blockschedule, students have fewer classes each day buttake at least the same number of courses as atraditional schedule. This model is also called therotation or rotating day,A-B,Day 1/Day 2,oralternate-day model. \n# GOALS OF BLOCK SCHEDULING\n\nBlock schedules are perceived as a stimulant forschool improvement.Block schedules are onesolution for
