It has to be admittedthat the professors of orthodox social theory have not yetbeen substantially affected. Some of them have absorbedscraps of Marxism, but they have not become exponentsof Marxism as a whole. That,of course,is as one wouldexpect, because to become a Marxist is to agree that themost essential task to-day is the destruction of the capi-talist system. One cannot expect the intellectual de-fenders of the existing order to go very far in that direction. \nAs a result of the growing interest in Marxism, therehave been published,in the last few years, many articlesand quite a number of books on that mouthful—DialecticalMaterialism. The books have had a pretty wide circu-lation amongst the socialist intelligentsia, who in manycases have realised only recently that such a thing asdialectical materialism exists. The Labour College Move-ment,however,in the course of its educational work doneby workers among workers, has interested itself in dialec-tical materialism for a quarter of a century. Up till com-paratively recently one of the few books available on thesubject in English was Dietzgen's Positive Outcome ofPhilosophy.1 This, however,is not only a large book, but a decidedly difficult book.Fred Casey in Thinking²and also in Method in Thinking³succeeded in puttingDialectical Materialism in a form in which it could be moreeasily absorbed by the average worker-student. \nIn the following pages,Dr.Conze has endeavoured toprovide another introduction on somewhat different lines. His book is intended to do two things. First,to givesome indication of what dialectical materialism is,and todo it in language that the ordinary worker-student can \n18/6,or 9/-post free, from the N.C.L.C.Thinking.Out of print.3Method in Thinking,1/3,or 1/5 post free. \nunderstand.Second,to apply the theory to certain currentsocial problems and by so doing demonstrate the valueof the theory to the student of social questions. \nThe book itself arose mainly out of a series of articleswhich Dr.Conze wrote for Plebs, and the author andpublishers of the book will welcome any suggestions fromreaders which might tend to simplify any passages whichstill provide difficulties for the worker-student. \nJ.P.M.MILLAR, \nGeneral Secretary, \nNational Council of Labour Colleges,15 South Hill Park Gardens, \nLondon,N.W.3.","cbCailpRjP0FdPSR","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailpRjP0FdPSR","pdf",3489596,68,"English","# Contents\n## Introduction\n## Things must be Studied in their Inter-relations\n## Things must be Studied in their Movements\n## The Unity of Opposites\n## Contradiction as the Cause of Change\n# Foreword","[{\"question\":\"Why does the foreword say the Russian Revolution increased interest in Marxism?\",\"answer\":\"It points to a noticeable rise in attention to Marxism and explains that orthodox social theory professors have not yet been substantially affected.\"},{\"question\":\"What problem does the foreword identify with earlier English books on dialectical materialism?\",\"answer\":\"It says an earlier available work was Dietzgen’s Positive Outcome of Philosophy, but that it was large and decidedly difficult.\"},{\"question\":\"What does Edward Conze aim to achieve in the following pages?\",\"answer\":\"He aims to give an indication of what dialectical materialism is in language ordinary worker-students can understand, and to apply the theory to social problems to demonstrate its value.\"}]","An Introduction - Dialectical Materialism - Foreword | PDF",171]
