primary decisionwas of a date at which to begin oursurvey.After much discussion,wehave selected 1830.Forsyth's percus-sion principle had been patented andwas entering common use;percussioncaps had appeared;Dreyse was work-ing on his bolt-action Needle Gun andLefaucheaux was developing the pin-fire cartridge.From 1830 onward,theinventions and designs,stimulated bythe inventive awareness of the 19thcentury and aided by the rapid im-provements in machinery and manu-facturing technique due to the Indus-trial Revolution,became an ever-widening stream.  \nALTHOUGH THE FIREARM has a longhistory,as the introductory section ofthis bookoutlines,the amount of tech-nical progress during the first fivehundred years was relatively small.Apart from the flintlock mechanism,there was
