from London to Lima, viathe Amazon River.I had three objects in view. The first was to visit Pará and Manáos—Amazontowns served by the vessels of the Booth SteamshipCompany,Limited—(Manáos being 900 miles upthe Amazon River ncar the junction with theNégro)and to inspect in Manáos a harbour enter-prise managed in London. The sccond was toreach Iquitos, some 1300 miles beyond Manáos;Iquitos is the capital of Loreto,a transandineprovince of Perll, and served by direct steamerssailing monthly from Livcrpool under the manage-ment of the Booth Steamship Company.HereMessrs.Alfred Booth and Co.have built a harbourunder the terms of a Peruvian concession.Mythird object was to penetrate to the limit of waternavigation and cross the Andes to reach Lima.Iwished to study certain possibilities of navigationand the problem of connecting Peru on the Pacificwith Peru on the Amazon, and to discuss withthe Government of Lima various forms of develop-ment that might affect the business enterprisesin which I was interested. \nAs far as Iquitos all was plain sailing, but in- \nfornation upon the next 1500 miles of journcywas scanty and not encouraging.I proposed tofollow the Rivers Ucayali,Pachitea and Pichis forabout a thousand miles and then take to the woodsand follow a track known as the“Pichis Highway,”about 150 miles long and bringing one to the largevillage of La Merccd, within a few days'ride ofOroya, the limit of the Lima-Oroya railway.Sucha journey once successfully accomplished would,I felt, find me in Lima well equipped to deal moreor less efficiently with the business points I hadin view;but tempting as it was both as an adven-ture and a commercial opportunity,I should neverhave had the courage to undertake it alone.Mywife intrepidly determined to come.and we wereaccompanied by Doctor Claude Horton and joinedat Iquitos by Mr.W Harold Tregoning, who wasthe enginecr-in-charge of the harbour constructionat Iquitos. Our itinerary was as follows: \n# always anehored at night. We alsohad several strandings, and some repairs to ourpropeller blades had to be undertaken,so thatour speed seemed remarkably good. \nMy wife kept a diary from Manáos to Limaand I made some notes. The following short intro-duetion based thereon is intended to give soniegeneral idea of the Amazon. \nThe Amazon is indeed a wonderful river. Itsproportions,as far as water is eoneerned, areeolossal and entirely without rival.
