I had the great fortune to study political science at Yale University during the late 1970sand early 1980s. The political science department gave me the freedom to engage my humanist sensibilities, an act of intellectual toleration that went against the prevailing tendencies in the discipline. I want to thank my committee of Robert Lane, Juan Linz, and particularly David Apter, the chairman, for helping guide a confused graduate student through the bureaucracy of academia and doing so in away that provided the space for me to follow my curiosity. In addition, I benefited from the intellectual generosity of Douglas Rae, James Scott, Stanley Greenberg, and the late Philip White. \nWhile writing this work, I received encouragement and intellectual support from many friends and acquaintances, including associates from my Yale days: Horace Porter, Carla Carr, Frank Gonzales, Randall Kennedy, Adolph Reed, Eileen Hormel, Angelo Messore, Rabbi Arnold Wolfe, Marcus Bruce, Eugene Rivers, Henry Louis Gates, Norris Sakwe-Mante, Isabelle Gunning, Mary Davis, Deborah King, and the late Carl Price. I also benefited from my association with Kathy Rees, Larry Jackson, Helura Lyle, Tanya Green, Paul Kumar, Kris Graves, Eric Greene, Ethan Flad, Eve Goldberg, Fred Montas, Natalie Difloff, Joy Anderson, Nina Karnovsky, Steve Vacarro, Lisa Freeman, Alford Young, Carla O’Connor, Amy Randall, Beau Dunning, Josh Freely,“L.T.,”Maureen Kay, Tanya Jones, Denise Burgher, the Whitters family, and former Wesleyan colleagues: Robert O’Meally, Peter Marx, Georgie Leone, Barbara Craig, Steven Gregory, Michael Harris, Ollie Holme","cbCaiq161NB43eCu","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiq161NB43eCu","pdf",2507662,592,"English","# Contents\n## Acknowledgments\n## Preface\n## Introduction\n## Birth of an Intellectual Journey\n## Bohemian Immersions\n## An Alien among Outsiders\n## Rejecting Bohemia: The Politicization of Ethnic Guilt\n## The Quest for a Blacker Art\n## Toward a Blacker Arts Infrastructure\n## Black Arts Poet and Essayist\n## Black Revolutionary Playwright\n## Kawaida: Totalizing the Commitment\n## The Slave as Master: Black Nationalism, Kawaida, and the Repression of Women\n## New-Ark and the Emergence of Pragmatic Nationalism\n## Pan-Africanism\n## National Black Political Convention\n## Ever Faithful: Toward a Religious Marxism\n## The Artist as Marxist / The Marxist as Artist\n## Conclusion\n## Notes\n## Bibliography\n## Index\n## About the Author","[{\"question\":\"How does the book structure Amiri Baraka’s intellectual development?\",\"answer\":\"It presents a staged progression through numbered chapters, moving from early formation to bohemian experiences, later politicization, and culminating commitments linking art to political and ideological frameworks.\"},{\"question\":\"What topics does the book cover regarding Black Arts?\",\"answer\":\"It examines the emergence of a Black Arts infrastructure and Baraka’s roles as poet, essayist, and revolutionary playwright, connecting aesthetic choices to political commitment.\"},{\"question\":\"Which ideological themes are emphasized in the later chapters?\",\"answer\":\"The later sections address Kawaida and Black nationalism, pan-Africanism, a national political convention, and a turn toward religious Marxism, ending with an explicit pairing of artist and Marxist.\"}]","Amiri Baraka - The Politics and Art of a Black Intellectual | PDF",1789771176,912]
