After the burial, she was taken to live with her father’s elder sister in a crowded compound in Kano. At first, neighbors said,“At least she has family.”  \nFamily, however, is not always the same as kindness.  \nHer auntie believed suffering built character. Amina woke before the first call to prayer, swept the sandy compound, fetched water from the borehole two streets away, washed clothes that were not hers, and prepared pap before the other children even opened their eyes. If she made a mistake, her aunt’s voice would rise like harmattan wind dry, sharp, unforgiving.  \nSchool became a luxury. Sometimes her aunt would say there was no money for fees, yet Amina watched her cousins carry new bags and polished sandals. On those mornings, Amina stayed back to fry akara to sell by the roadside. She learned to count change quickly. She learned to swallow tears  \neven faster.  \nBut she also learned something else how to pray.  \nAt night, lying on a thin mat beside the kitchen, she would whisper,“God, you see me.” It was not a long prayer. It was not polished theology. It was a child insisting that heaven must be watching.  \nYears passed. Suffering, strangely, did not harden her. It made her observant. She studied whenever she could borrow books. She listened carefully in church. She carried herself with a quiet dignity that did not beg for pity.  \nOne Sunday, during a church youth program in Lagos she had moved there to work as a shop assistant she met Chinedu. He was not impressed by beauty alone, though Amina was beautiful in that effortless way that comes from resilience. What caught him was her calm strength. She spoke gently, but her words had weight.  \nChinedu came from a wealthy family involved in import and export business. He had cars, properties, influence. Yet he found himself drawn to this young woman who owned almost nothing but faith and integrity.  \nTheir courtship was careful and respectful. Amina feared disappointment; life had trained her to expect it. But Chinedu was consistent. He visited her small apartment. He met the pastor who had helped her. He listened to her story without trying to rescue her from it.  \nWhen they married, it was not just a wedding it was restoration.  \nThe girl who once sold akara under the hot sun now lived in a spacious home in Lekki. The woman who was once denied school fees went back to complete her education, sponsored by her husband. But the most remarkable thing was not the wealth.  \nIt was what she did with it.  \nAmina began supporting orphaned children through her church. She paid school fees quietly. She visited compounds that looked like the one she grew up in.
