Set against the realities of 2008, the text positions the discussion as an effort to update traditional models for America’s role as the world changes fundamentally. It emphasizes shared ground across party lines, reflects on concerns about Iraq, and explains the book’s goal of seeking solutions a next president will face.","AMERICA \nand the \nWORLD \nZBIGNIEW \nBRZEZINSKI \nAMERICA \nand the \nWORLD \nBRENT \nSCOWCROFT \nconversationson the future of american for eign p o licy \na member of the perseus books group \nnew york \nCopyright © 2008 Zbigniew Brzezinski and Brent Scowcroft Introduction copyright © 2008 David Ignatius \nPublished by Basic Books, A Member of the Perseus Books Group \nAll rights reserved. Over many \nmornings and afternoons in the spring of 2008, they sat down together to talk through our country’s current problems—and to look for solutions. The result is an intellectual journey, led by two of the nation’s best guides, into the world of choices the next president will confront. \nAs readers turn the pages of this book, they should imagine themselves sitting around a big conference table in an office building overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue. A few blocks up the street is the White House, where these two men managed the nation’s statecraft in their years as national security advisor. They arrive for each session immaculately dressed, as if heading for the Oval Office to brief the president. We start each conversation with a big cup of coffee or maybe a diet soda—and sometimes a jolt of sugar from some cookies or cake brought from home—and then we turn on the tape recorder. \nI invite you to listen in as two of America’s most clear-sighted practitioners of foreign policy think about the future. \nIntroduction \nThe starting point for these conversations was their belief that the world is changing in fundamental ways, and that our traditional models for understanding America’s role don’t work very well. Both men believe the United States is in some difficulty abroad because it hasn’t yet adapted to these new realities. Both question conventional wisdom and received ideas—and try to view the world with fresh eyes. Both are fundamentally optimistic about America’s future, as you will see, but only if the country can rise to the challenge of dealing with the world as it now is, not as we wish it to be. \nThis book was an experiment to see if a prominent Democrat and a prominent Republican—speaking only for themselves and not for or against either party—could find common ground for anew start in foreign policy. Brzezinski and Scowcroft had special standing for this exercise, since each was a prescient early skeptic about the war in Iraq. They understood before most other foreign policy analysts the dangers and difficulties the United States would
