The bogeyman of AI research. We’ve all heard the word in horror stories and media, but what does it really mean?  \nAt the turn of the 21st century, simple AI were just starƟng to become ubiquitous. Language learning models and generaƟve AIs quickly rose to popularity, but these were simple things. Plenty of A, very liƩle I. I remember my great grandmother talking about trying to get it to generate an image of a centaur, and ending up with a hilarious and horrifying amalgamaƟon of parts. But since then, AI has advanced.  \nNow, we have fully complex AI, colloquially known as “smart” AI – arƟficial generaƟve intelligence, or complex AIs, depending on how technical you want to be – running the gamut from government surveillance to personal assistance. All ships have, by law, a category-α Smart AI to navigate FTL. All staƟons and city-ships have a networked cluster of category-β working together to keep everything running.  \nBut, Keighgan, you might ask. We all know this. What does this have to do with malignancy? Well, hold your keyboards, I have a word count to boost or my editor complains about how long this takes me to write.  \nWhen people think of malignancy, they think of an AI flipping on a dime to“kill all humans”, but in reality, it’s not that simple. AI are all required, by law, to have some basic limitaƟons built in. Some of the AI Rights people say this  \n“shackling” is unethical. I reply: look, a toddler doesn’t comprehend ethics or morality, so we impose strict rules. An AI is like a toddler with a gun. They need these limitaƟons to keep from shooƟng everyone for efficiency’s sake.  \nAn AI is considered “malignant” when its code grows erraƟc, and starts tesƟng these limitaƟons.  \nWILLIAM AUBÉ opened his eyes, and immediately wished he hadn’t.
