own classes to a junior high schoolwhere they acted as tutors this year. \nThese students found the time and the transporta-tion to get to Edward Hand Junior High, for an hourtwice a week. They worked with slow learners, childrenwho were unable to keep up with their classmates inthe regular classroom work. The Franklin and Marshallmen were told in advance not to expect miracles.Asone of them later reported,“The basic problem is oneof motivation—if they were interested in the learning, there would be no difficulty in teaching them the sub-ject.” \nThe idea was conceived by College Chaplain,RobertTaylor, who had heard of programs in New Englandwhere college students went to libraries or homes towork with school children who were having learningdifficulties. The program began at Franklin and Mar-shall as a summer project last year, but did not pro-duce results during summer sessions. So,it was startedagain in the fall, with the cooperation of local schoolofficials who set up times for the tutors to work withsmall groups of children during the school day. \nSome of the children were academically deficientaccording to test results, but many simply had resistedthe opportunity to learn,to be challenged in the class-room.Others faced economic pressures to get a joband drop out of school. \nThe college tutors were encouraged to try to developinterest in the subject matter and to build up personalrapport with the children,a rapport which came moreeasily in some cases because the college student didnot automatically carry a \"teacher image.\" \nWITHOUT AN \nIMAGE \nSuccess was not rapid or complete by any means.“All my efforts seemed like a small drop in a largepond”or “They have not yet ...learned to relateideas or even things,\"or“They all agree
